Lilly established the Delivery Device business for the purpose of crafting, developing, launching, and revolutionizing proprietary delivery device systems. This business is unique to the broader Lilly Research Labs organization due to its focus on patient centered delivery system solutions, its innovative approach to deliver platforms using both internal and external technologies, and its level of integration with the commercial groups and Business Units. The Delivery, Device and Connected Solutions (DDCS) organization uses alliances in design and manufacturing to rapidly convert proprietary concepts into products that meet the users’ needs and intended uses.
DDCS is seeking an Associate Vice President Delivery Systems Engineering & Technology to provide technology and engineering leadership to support product innovation and product development for delivery and device systems. This position is responsible for leading the integrated commercial technology and systems engineering organization in DDCS and our alliance partners to develop, test, and launch these delivery systems spanning mechanical and electromechanical systems.
This role will apply your extensive knowledge of the industry to drive the team to success. We are actively seeking an individual with strong skills in the follow areas.
Position responsibilities:
Delivery System Design and Integration:
- System Design and Engineering: build and lead a world-class engineering and technology organization, which includes expertise in mechanical, electromechanical, electrical, firmware, systems and human factors engineering. These capabilities will be applied to all assets within development portfolio at Lilly (small and large molecule).
- Integrated control strategy: organization will design, develop and transfer a comprehensive delivery-device control strategy to Lilly manufacturing
- Lead comprehensive risk management, design control and patient safety development strategies.
People:
- Responsible for the development and leadership of Systems, Embedded software, Electrical, Mechanical, Human Factors Engineers, Systems level mechanical and electrical Test Laboratory Engineers and Engineering Directors.
- Provide leadership, feedback, mentorship, and performance/career development support to team members
- Ensure career development discussions, talent assessment, and succession planning are in established for employees.
- Build and implement a comprehensive long-range recruiting strategy and technical succession plan to ensure that a highly driven and sustainable multidimensional technical organization is maintained.
- Empower and encourage by recognizing what is important to employees; reward and recognize appropriately
- Set high expectations for value creation, coordinate performance, and take appropriate action
Strategy / Corporate Integration:
- Accountability for the execution of a Delivery and Device Strategy, with other members of the management team, to anticipate anticipated growth in the delivery business both in terms of the existing base of business and the future ventures
- Partner closely the Business Units, Affiliates, Medical, Manufacturing and Marketing to deliver strategies and align project workloads.
Portfolio Management
- The position would have full technical ownership for building and transferring robust mechanical and electromechanical delivery systems for entire development portfolio at Lilly
- The Senior Director will partner with Lilly Manufacturing and Business Units on strategic life cycle delivery system projects.
Alliances / Advisory Boards:
- Responsible for supporting existing alliances and developing additional alliances as the business and capability requirements evolve to drive value and on-time delivery.
- Represent Lilly and DDCS on external Advisory Boards.
Minimum requirements:
- BS in Engineering with 15+ years of drug delivery, device design, development and registration experience OR MS/PhD in Engineering with 10+ years of drug delivery, device design, development and registration experience.
- 5 + years of experience in managing senior technical personnel and sophisticated alliance partnerships demonstrating strong leadership skills.
Additional Skills and Preferences:
- Broad integrated technical knowledge for device development, and commercialization (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, embedded software, systems engineering, verification & validation, test method development etc.)
- Previous experience leading successful delivery and commercialization of mechanical and electromechanical device projects.
- Significant experience in the development of new/innovative technologies and application to new mechanical and electromechanical delivery devices, including experience in transferring technology into manufacturing and commercializing products.
- Experience with working in a diverse and highly networked technical organization with proven skills to manage suppliers and alliance partners.
- Understanding of Systems Engineering, Risk Management and the Design Control process.
- Understanding of and experience with device regulations (CFR 820.30 and IS0 13485).
- Business skills (capital and expense differentiation and impact on COPS and variance).
- Communication and social skills vital for broad interactions at all levels of the corporation.
