Position Announcement
The Department of Languages and Cultures at Utah Valley University is seeking a student Japanese Tutor.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Tutor students enrolled in Japanese courses, particularly lower-division courses, in person and virtually.
- Complete tutoring certification program, model problem-solving skills, and study strategies, assist in curriculum design for the language lab, and improve personal language skills.
- Participate in the production and dissemination of promotional materials and events.
- Assist students with language-specific programs online and in computer labs.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the lab manager.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
- Ethical, responsible, motivated self-starter who needs little supervision after training.
- Ability to adhere to a set schedule with little supervision.
- Evidence of advanced customer service and interpersonal skills.
- General computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, etc.).
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Native or near-native proficiency in language comprehension, production, and writing.
- Knowledge and ability to explain, in detail, aspects of Japanese (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation, colloquial usage, etc.) as covered in Japanese 3050, or equivalent.
- Engagement with the Japanese community outside the academic setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Majoring or minoring in Japanese.
- Experience in teaching or tutoring.
- Experience in utilizing tutoring services.
- Experience in collating and analyzing data in Microsoft Excel.
