Department Summary

The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, housed under the Global Studies Institute, is a research and outreach center devoted to promoting understanding of the Asia-Pacific region. Its primary aim is to foster collaborative and individual research engaging Asia-interested scholars from the UO, the nation, and around the world. The Center is distinctive in terms of its geographic scope with programmatic focus on East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

Position Summary

As the CAPS Associate Director, you will be responsible for all day-to-day operations of CAPS programs. This includes 1) overseeing all state, grant, and foundation budgets (currently over $1 million per year); 2) supervising all staff, including graduate employees and student assistants; 3) managing all grant and state funded projects, 4) developing and overseeing programming for academic and outreach center; and 5) setting strategic priorities for internal awards and external funding applications. This position reports directly to the Center Director.

Minimum Requirements
• Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Five years of administrative experience.
• Two years of experience working with private and federal grant proposals, from the development, submission, and management stage.

Professional Competencies
• Experience in program development, management, budget-tracking, and reporting.
• Understanding of federal and private awards, including rules, regulations, and reporting requirements.
• Event planning experience (some travel and weekend/evening work required).
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Familiarity with curriculum and/or program development.
• Experience working with faculty, staff, and/or students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Must be able to work well on a team as well as individually.
• High level of organizational, time-management, and intercultural skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to be flexible and creative when problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in an institution of higher education.
• Experience in Asia/Pacific Islands.
• Knowledge of Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean.
• Experience in international academic program development.
• Five years’ experience writing private and federal grant proposals, award management and reporting.
• Experience with program evaluation.
• Strategic planning experience for both fiscal budgets and new programming.
• International experience through study, employment, travel, or residency.
• Relevant database and software system experience (Banner, Cognos, SAP Concur).
• Advanced experience in Microsoft Suite (specifically Excel, Word, and Outlook)
