Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$63,000 – $162,800
The Eli Lilly and Company Diabetes, Obesity, and Complications Therapeutic Area research organization has created a research team focused on discovery and preclinical development of new therapeutics in the areas of Diabetes, Obesity and Cardiovascular and Renal Complications. The discovery team is looking for an experienced pharmacologist with proven record of accomplishment in drug discovery with experience in the development and implementation of assays with which to identify and characterize new therapeutics. The successful candidate will have skills to contribute to in vitro assays and in vivo rodent studies in a team environment supporting small molecule, large molecule, and gene editing projects. Primary responsibilities will include conducting the live-phase of pharmacology studies and the post study sample analysis. The candidate will collaborate with the Chemistry, Biotherapeutics, and Genetic Medicines groups in a team-oriented environment and support other groups in the Diabetes, Obesity, and Complications Therapeutic Area with their expertise as needed.
Primary responsibilities will include performing proof-of-concept studies, in vivo assay development and optimization, and execution of studies to support target validation and lead optimization. We collaborate with the Chemistry, Biotherapeutics, and Genetic Medicines groups in a team-oriented environment and support other groups in the Diabetes and Complications Therapeutic Area as needed.
Key Objectives/Deliverables
- Conduct acute and chronic in vivo studies including mouse and rat handling, blood and tissue collection, measurement of blood-based biomarkers, body weight and food intake as well as test article formulation and administration by oral gavage and subcutaneous, intravenous, retro-orbital, hydrodynamic, and intramuscular injection
- Assessment of clinical chemistries, protein concentrations, mRNA quantification, body composition analysis, respiratory quotient, lipoprotein lipid analysis, and other parameters of metabolism
- Perform small animal surgical procedures including, but not limited to, rodent catheter and mini pump implantation
- Conduct experiments using chemical and biological hazards
- Requirement for accurate record keeping, independent data analysis, and reporting of data in written and oral formats. Will perform work in full compliance with Lilly Research Policies, and complete all required training activities in the timeframe specified
Minimum Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in biology or a closely related field
- Expertise in or willingness to learn handling small laboratory animals
- Flexible scheduling is a requirement. The position is full-time (40 hrs/wk), but not all regularly scheduled work hours will occur Mon-Fri from 8 AM-4:45 PM.
Additional Skills/Preferences
- Familiarity with setting up and running biochemical assays, evaluating ex vivo primary tissue assays, conducting cell culture, and conducting protein analysis and transcription profiling
- Prefer prior laboratory experience
- Proven ability to work in flexible, team-oriented environment
- Experience in diabetes and/or metabolic diseases is preferred
- Oral/written communication/listening skills in English are essential
- Strong relationship-building and interaction skills with peers and management
Additional Information:
There is a requirement to work after-hours or on weekends on occasion.
The position level will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience. The position is governed by regulations including OSHA, AAALAC, OLAW and NRC – compliance to all applicable regulations is required. Travel requirement 0-10%.
