Development Associate Job Description

Primary Function

This position provides support for the Development and Communications Department by cultivating relationships with donors, organizing memorable events, and driving individual donor engagement and retention. The Development Associate reports directly to the Director of Development. The Development Associate must be an organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and dependable individual. This person must have a strong belief in the importance of the ICAN mission and the work we do, with a willingness to learn about and advocate for the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, regardless of prior experience in this field.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. The ICAN Development Associate will generally work Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm; or an alternate schedule depending on events

during the week days and/or weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be eligible to work legally in the United States
  • Must be able to maintain regular attendance and consistently arrive on time
  • Must have the ability to communicate with a variety of individuals including, but not limited to board members, donors, sponsors, and the public
  • Must be able to multitask and work independently
  • Must be able to meet schedules and deadlines
  • Must be an organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and dependable individual
  • Must follow all the rules and regulations listed in ICAN’s Policy and Procedures Manual and ICAN’s Code of Conduct and Ethics

Education, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2 years of experience in fundraising, with a focus on individual giving and/or event management
  • Must have strong computer skills and be comfortable using a computer regularly, including the use of Apple Macs, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and donor databases
  • Must have strong written communication skills – Ability to draft clear, concise emails, memos, and correspondence for internal and external audiences
  • Must be people-oriented with strong customer service and problem solving skills
  • Must have strong typing skills
  • Must be fluent in English and have strong/professional English writing and grammar skills
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or ASL a plus

Licenses and Other Requirements

  • Must have the ability to pass tuberculosis skin test
  • Submit to a fingerprint clearance through LiveScan before starting employment
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified or be willing to complete CPR and First Aid certification
  • Must be CPI certified or willing to complete prevention-first training at hire
  • Must have reliable transportation. If using a private vehicle, valid California Driver’s License or valid driver’s license from another state at the time of hire and throughout employment with a clean three year driving record. Willingness to submit to DMV background check and provide evidence of current auto registration and liability insurance

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Working in indoor and outdoor environments, as well as traveling

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director of Development in the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns, special events, and initiatives
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors at all levels, with a focus on growing the mid-level donor base and major gift pipeline
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development to craft personalized donor engagement plans for key supporters
  • Manage donor databases, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information
  • Acknowledge and recognize donors through personalized communications, thank-you letters, and acknowledgments
  • Support the coordination of fundraising events, including logistics, attendee management, and post-event follow-up
  • Maintain accurate records of donor interactions, contributions, fundraising activities and ensuring all funds are properly accounted for
  • Generate reports and analysis to track fundraising progress and provide insights for improvement
  • Collaborates with departments to identify and create donor opportunities
  • Assist in the event planning for department specific special events
  • Participates in community outreach events such as chamber meetings and Community Based Organization boards to build relationships with local businesses and organizations
  • Collaborates with the Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting and retaining volunteers
  • Attends ongoing training and education courses as needed
  • Performs other duties as necessary
