Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is involved in key activities for the development of synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients from pre-clinical phases through commercialization. Our scientists and engineers develop innovative technical solutions to advance an exciting portfolio that includes small molecules, synthetic peptides, oligonucleotides, and other emerging therapeutic modalities by cultivating a hardworking, culturally diverse workforce that exhibits deep technical expertise, SMDD delivers on these responsibilities to bring the next generation of life changing medicines to patients.
Our team is looking for motivated, creative, and energetic candidates to design and optimize purification processes to support Lilly’s synthetic molecule portfolio. This position will involve chromatography and filtration process development as well as analytical method development and characterization to deliver processes for small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, and conjugate molecules. In this role, the candidate will work in a dynamic team of purification scientists/engineers and analytical scientists to ensure successful delivery of our early and late-stage portfolio of synthetic molecules supporting pre-clinical, clinical, and commercial production. This work is critical for the development of robust purification processes that allow a consistent supply of Lilly medicines to patients. Top candidates for this position will be expected to:
- Have a strong work ethic, scientific curiosity, and a hands-on problem-solving mentality
- Demonstrate high learning agility with the ability to understand and exploit new scientific concepts and methods across multiple disciplines; be able to apply these learnings to a portfolio of small molecule, oligonucleotide, and synthetic peptide modalities.
- Develop analytical and preparative-scale purification methods for isolation and characterization of API and target impurities with the ability to scale-up methods for material deliveries and GMP manufacturing
- Explore new technologies and approaches for analytical and purification method development
- Perform risk-assessments to help define the commercial control strategy for regulatory filing
- Prioritize multiple projects on different molecules to meet project timelines
- Collaborate closely with other functional areas including chemistry and analytical groups as well as external partners
- Embrace diverse thought, background, and experience to deliver innovative solutions
- Possess strong communication (oral, written), and organizational skills
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S./M.S. Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
Additional Skills/Preferences:
- 2+ years experience in analytical method development and/or purification development in the pharmaceutical industry (level commensurate with experience)
- Experience with preparative chromatography
- Experience with HPLC/UPLC and mass spectrometry
- Good interpersonal skills and a sustained tendency for collaboration
- Demonstrated initiative and risk-taking
- Demonstrated technical proficiency and ability to create ideas for future work plans
