Volunteer Coordinator Job Description
Schedule
This is a full-time position. The ICAN Volunteer Coordinator will generally work Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm; or an alternate schedule depending on events during the week days and/or weekends.
Primary Function
The ICAN Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the recruitment, training, and implementation of a vibrant volunteer program across the organization and works in collaboration with department managers to provide quality community engagement and volunteer opportunities in their respective departments.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be eligible to work legally in the United States
- Must be able to consistently arrive on time and maintain regular attendance
- Must be able to multitask and work independently with clients
- Must be able to meet schedules and deadlines
- Must be an organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and dependable individual
- Must follow all the rules and regulations listed in ICAN’s Policy and Procedures Manual and ICAN’s Code of Conduct and Ethics
- Must be comfortable working with and directly caring for people with developmental disabilities, whether in a controlled environment or in the community
Education, Experience, and Knowledge
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Six months experience working with people with disabilities preferred but not required
- Must have adequate typing skills
- Must be fluent in English and have basic English writing and grammar skills
- Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or ASL a plus
Licenses and Other Requirements
- Must have the ability to pass tuberculosis skin test
- Submit to a fingerprint clearance through LiveScan before starting employment
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified or be willing to complete CPR and First Aid certification
- Must be CPI certified or willing to complete prevention-first training at hire
- Must have reliable transportation. If using a private vehicle, valid California Driver’s License or valid driver’s license from another state at the time of hire and throughout employment with a clean three year driving record. Willingness to submit to DMV background check and provide evidence of current auto registration and liability insurance.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 70 pounds including pushing a wheelchair
- Working in indoor and outdoor environments, as well as traveling
Essential Responsibilities:
- Creates and implements engagement opportunities and programs for volunteers
- Lead the volunteer program and develop necessary changes to meet departmental needs and volunteer categories
- Exhibit an outgoing and vibrant personality while working with volunteers
- Work in unison with leadership in recruitment of volunteers for support work and recommend assignments that will make the best use of volunteers’ skills
- Attend monthly internal team meetings to maintain connection to department managers
- Surveys volunteer engagement and provides feedback to executive leadership
- Manage volunteers for major projects and events
- Compiles and maintains volunteer records as well as online databases
- Identifies potential service project partners and serves as liaison to community outlets
- Work with Human Resources to implement policies and procedures for the volunteer department and instructs local staff on best practices
- Educates volunteers of best practices
- Provides standard orientation and assists with onboarding for all new volunteers
- Conduct training programs for volunteers
- Maintains database, volunteer time records and applications
- Implement volunteer recognition and appreciation events
- Assists in fundraising efforts as a member of the Development & & Community team
- Provides guidance, training, and supports staff working with volunteers
- Follow up with potential volunteer emails and phone calls
- Performs other duties as necessary
