Summary of Position

The Associate Director – Executive Communications will play a leading role in crafting compelling content and leading the editorial and operational strategy for Executive Communications initiatives in support of a consistent narrative and experience.

Under the strategic direction of the Associate Vice President, the Associate Director – Executive Communications will be responsible for creation and review of long and short-form written content published on multiple corporate platforms reaching key audiences and geographies. This includes creating messaging and content for a range of uses, including speeches, presentations, and digital channels.

This position will have a specific expertise in executive writing and assist in creating and managing content for executives, in consultation with other content creators in the organization.

An agile communicator with strong writing, editing and consulting skills – and experience navigating the complexity of a highly matrixed structure – the Associate Director – Executive Communications will collaborate with colleagues across Global Communications, External Communications, the Communications Activation team, and other teams to provide strategic counsel, identify stories and implement an executive content plan supporting with the Lilly narrative. The Associate Director – Executive Communications will work closely with colleagues on the Communications Activation team, helping to produce high-quality content consistent with the executives’ messaging and voice.

The Associate Director – Executive Communications should be prepared to provide additional support as needed for Lilly Global Communications, such as leading key projects as well as internal and external initiatives and vendors.

The position is located in Indianapolis, reporting to the Associate Vice President, Executive Communications.

Key Objectives/Deliverables

  • Creates long- and short-form written content for Lilly’s executives – including speeches and digital content – and supports the Associate Vice President in managing creation of executive content.
  • Collaborates closely with the Communications Activation, External and Internal Communications teams, as well as subject matter experts and project managers, to deliver work that supports Lilly’s objectives and drives results.
  • Consults with other executive content creators across the enterprise to provide counsel and ensure appropriate voice, tone and consistency of messaging and format.
  • In partnership with the Communications Activation experts, drives creation of other written content supporting Lilly’s executives and narrative storytelling strategy, including content for Lilly.com and Lilly’s corporate social media channels.
  • Edits content to ensure appropriate Lilly voice and tone and supporting Lilly’s editorial strategy.
  • In partnership with the Associate Vice President, Executive Communications, completes team priorities, including the editorial strategy for executives, and drives operational efficiencies in the messaging/content development process to meet project and team needs.
  • Writes and reviews content to ensure adherence to Lilly communications’ quality standards as well as legal, regulatory and privacy compliance.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years agency and/or in-house experience crafting content for print, video and/or digital and social for corporate executives.
  • Minimum of 5 years writing and/or editing experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or a related field.
  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization and/or visas for this role.

Additional Skills/Preference

  • Outstanding writing portfolio demonstrating excellence across a range of subject matters and purposes.
  • Ability to edit and write for a variety of channels including social/digital, speeches, videos, podcasts, etc.
  • Media relations experience for a large organization.
  • Ability to interface professionally and persuasively with corporate leaders and managers and ability to mediate solutions.
  • Ability to combine business strategy, brand strategy and consumer insight to create content for internal and external audiences.
  • Advanced understanding of corporate review processes, legal and regulatory guidelines as well as MS Office Suite, and other relevant software.
  • Understanding of and experience with new and established social media platforms.
  • Experience working globally and externally preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply practical or technical knowledge where no direction is given.
  • Strong organization and project management skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines and deal with rapidly changing priorities and timelines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of key marketplace factors for pharmaceuticals, as well as critical global business issues and drivers.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to think quickly and analytically to accommodate a dynamic communications environment.
  • Understanding of and experience with CMS and UX design principles.
  • Growing in a fast-paced environment, responding well to feedback, and maintaining a positive demeanor.

Additional Information

Some international and domestic travel expected as conditions and business needs arise.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$122,250 – $179,300

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
