An Accounting Technician supervises and participates in the maintenance of financial records and preparation of regular and special reports.

ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION

Supervises and participates in the maintenance of financial records and preparation of regular and special reports.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES

An Accounting Technician assumes direct supervisory responsibility for a major accounting clerical function such as payroll, accounts payable, or general accounting, and performs complex clerical accounting work related to District budget, state and federal programs.

A Financial Services Specialist analyzes data, prepares fiscal reports and projections; assists in the development of solutions to complex problems.

An Account Clerk III assumes functional responsibility for an accounting clerical activity such as student body accounting, special education accounting, payroll, general accounting, or accounts payable. The work of this class requires the frequent use of independent judgment in making decisions within established accounting systems and procedures and may involve the indirect supervision of lower-level accounting clerical staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

General direction is provided by the Financial Director or other higher-level administrative positions.

Assignments may require the direct and indirect supervision of other accounting clerical or general clerical positions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Participates in central accounting functions such as monthly journal vouchers, fiscal year closing adjustments, and preparation for auditors.

Prepares, maintains and processes a variety of financial statistical documents such as mandated reports for federal and state auditors.

Supervises the maintenance of various financial records and budgetary control of financial accounts.

Reviews and analyzes monthly general ledger, revenue, and budget reports.

Assists in the development, implementation, and modification of accounting systems and procedures.

Advises and assists key administrative staff regarding accounting procedures and District policies.

Assists in annual budget preparation.

Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.

Performs related duties as assigned.

CLASS QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of accounting.

Methods, practices and terminology used in budgetary and financial record keeping.

Appropriate laws, rules and regulations relating to assigned functions.

Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.

Ability to:

Prepare a variety of regular and special financial and statistical reports.

Perform a variety of responsible accounting clerical work involving the exercise of judgment and knowledge of accounting systems and procedures.

Perform arithmetic calculations accurately and rapidly.

Operate a variety of office equipment including a personal computer, ten-key calculator, fax and copy machine.

Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the public.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Two years of recent and responsible experience in the preparation and maintenance of financial accounting records. Completed upper division college courses in accounting, business management, and finance may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

Desirable:

Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.

Prior to employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer of employment are a pre-employment physical exam (district-paid) and fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice.
