Required Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Japanese language, linguistics, Japanese literature, or a related field. The required degree must be completed by the start date.
Experience:
Required
- Experience teaching Japanese as a second language, preferably at the college level.
- Near-native fluency in modern spoken and written Japanese, with the ability to analyze and teach complex literary texts.
- Advanced proficiency in English to:
- Teach Japanese effectively to English-speaking students.
- Facilitate discussions on linguistic and literary analysis.
- Proficiency in computer-based software, including Microsoft Office and internet applications.
- Experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as BYU’s Learning Suite, or the ability to learn such systems quickly.
- Willingness to participate in training and professional development in language pedagogy and second-language acquisition.
Preferred
- Experience teaching Japanese at the college level, particularly in beginning and advanced language courses.
- Background in Japanese literature, literary analysis, or comparative literary studies.
- Familiarity with language-proficiency assessment criteria and experience developing fair and accurate testing procedures.
- Knowledge of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory and language-teaching pedagogy to develop curriculum materials and lesson plans, particularly in contexts where commercially published instructional materials are limited.
- Experience with translation, cross-linguistic analysis, and discussions of stylistic features in Japanese literature.
- Ability to evaluate reading comprehension, vocabulary mastery, and textual interpretation through structured assessments.
Duties/Expectations:
- Teach Japanese 444
- Provide individual and small-group instruction to support student learning and reinforce course content.
- Participate in professional development workshops and implement recommendations for instructional improvement.
- Develop a course syllabus and upload course materials to BYU Learning Suite.
- Respond promptly and professionally to communications and assignments from the Asian & Near Eastern Languages Department.
This position requires the successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.
