We are in search of ELI Teacher Aides for our Summer Camp Program!!

Estimated hourly range: $20.00 – $23.00/hour

Summer programs at Harker include a wide variety of academic and recreational offerings. We offer an academically focused K – 5 Summer Camp; the Summer Institute for Middle and High School-aged students; and our English Language Institute for international students. Position Summary

The ELI TA works closely with an ESL teacher to provide the appropriate care, guidance, motivation and mentorship for students to learn English. Support the ELI Administration with program set-up and break down.

Organize special events, recreational activities and community building. Assist the teacher with lesson planning, instruction, grading, data entry, behavior management and evaluations as needed. An ELI TA shall set a good example for students and colleagues including punctuality, dress, language and behavior. In addition, ELI TAs are responsible for always maintaining the physical and emotional safety of the students and placing the needs of students before their own.

Qualifications

  • College student or recent graduate. Education or English majors preferred.
  • Conversational proficiency in Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Russian preferred.
  • Experience working with children required
  • CPR and First Aid (Can be provided with job training)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision before school, recess, lunch and afterschool and during weekly Field Trips and during any special events or program requirements.
  • Collaborates with other summer programs to plan and oversee recreational activities and special events.
  • Follow program schedule as directed by ELI director.
  • Be on time for class and supervision responsibilities.
  • Work independently with students following guidelines set by teacher.
  • Coordinate with other aides to provide coverage for all areas of the program.
  • Meet deadlines set by ELI director.
  • Communicate with teacher about student issues either academic or behavioral.
  • Interact appropriately with parents during pick-up and drop off times.
  • Act as a translator for students when language difficulties arise.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting with extra-curricular activities as documented on the ELI Calendar
  • Provide translation at Opening/Closing Ceremony as needed
  • Organize and lead games and activities during Recreation Periods
  • Maintain and update accurate work hours
  • Offer feedback on student behavior and academic performance
  • Attend professional development trainings such as First Aid and CPR
  • Bus Supervision duty
  • Supervise students on Field Trips and Recreation if required.

Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements

  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, colleagues and parents.
  • Ability to communicate and educate students in safety policy and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to observe student academic progress, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and to assess and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards related to the job.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid and emergency response.
  • Cognitive and communication ability to assist in the academic classroom to help achieve student development objectives.

Working Conditions

  • May be subject to extended periods of time standing or walking.
  • Majority of time may be spent outside resulting in exposure to extremes in either heat or cold as weather and temperatures vary.
  • Lift equipment/supplies weighing 20 pounds.
  • Stand up and reach, bend down to interact with children
  • No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid and emergency responses.
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to safely supervise and manage students while at play
