ArtCenter College of Design Exhibitions seeks a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern for Summer 2025 for an internship which will introduce a current undergraduate student or recent graduate to the role of contemporary art exhibition curator and the full range of duties that such professionals perform: artist research, exhibition development, and art management. The internship will provide opportunities to work closely with and learn from ArtCenter Exhibitions’ seasoned curatorial team in a diverse array of projects as they prepare for upcoming exhibitions showcasing work by contemporary artists identifying as Black, Asian American, women, and other marginalized and intersectional identities.
The College’s Exhibitions department currently organizes programming across two venues: the Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery at ArtCenter’s Hillside Campus and the Peter and Merle Mullin Gallery at its South Campus. These venues embody ArtCenter’s institutional will to understand artistic thinking and design strategies as levers in promoting social advancement, the pursuit of humanitarian innovation and use of critical inquiry to clarify objectives and truths.
The internship is a full-time position of 35 hours per week, with a salary of $20.42/hour. The internship will take place during a consecutive 10-week period beginning no sooner than June 2, 2025, and ending no later than August 22, 2025. Its hours, with some flexibility, will be 9am to 5pm (including breaks), Mondays through Fridays. The internship will take place at ArtCenter’s Hillside and South Campuses. The Intern will be required to participate in educational events presented by the Getty Foundation, including an Arts Summit on June 23, 2025, and two Learning Community Events (dates TBA).
Over the ten-week internship program, the selected intern will provide essential support for ArtCenter Exhibitions; from managing department archives to conducting research on ArtCenter’s art collection and upcoming exhibitions of (and related public programming for) artists Devin Troy Strother, Patty Chang, and David Kelley, whose practices explore identity, culture, and climate change. The Intern will also assist in preparations for our collaborative partnership exhibition with the Japanese American National Museum, Cruising J-Town: Behind the Wheel of the Nikkei Community, which will open in late July.
The Getty Marrow Exhibitions Intern will provide a supporting role in presenting these important shows that engage the public on issues pertaining to diversity, immigrant narratives and climate change. The internship will also give its recipient an opportunity to work with the exhibitions’ artists and curatorial team in developing programming and outreach strategies to engage the wider public.
We anticipate that the Getty Marrow Exhibitions Intern will devote approximately 20% of their time to assisting in the coordination of public programming, such as lectures or panel discussions. While they will have an opportunity to contribute to all exhibition-related components taking place during the course of the internship, we expect the Exhibitions Intern to co-lead on 1-2 public programs from inception through completion. We envision them spending 30% of their time on curatorial research related to new exhibitions in development; and 50% receiving training on how exhibitions are planned and fabricated, including a view into the logistics and technical considerations of working with art pieces and artifacts. Together, the well-rounded skill set gained during the Getty Marrow Exhibitions Internship will be applicable to a future career working in a programmatic capacity in a museum or gallery setting.
