GLENDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS DESCRIPTION

HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR-CONDITIONING MECHANIC

DEFINITION

Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air- conditioning, refrigeration and related equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

General supervision is provided by an assigned craft Regional Maintenance Ssupervisor or a high-level maintenance management position.

Assignments may require the indirect supervision of general maintenance personnel.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Inspects, maintains, services, and repairs heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration equipment; and other related appliances.

Repairs, adjusts, and replaces compressors, coils, condensers, and motors.

Analyzes electrical and pneumatic control systems and determines appropriate installation and maintenance requirements of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.

Performs computer operations related to the input, monitoring, and field maintenance work in the repair of energy management system components.

Operates and supervises the operation of steam absorption heating and air-conditioning equipment at large facilities.

May provide technical or functional supervision to general maintenance personnel.

Performs related work as required.

CLASS QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Materials, tools, equipment, and methods of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and electrical trades.

Codes, ordinances, and regulations pertinent to the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems and other related equipment.

Safe work practices.

Ability to:

Install, repair, and maintain refrigeration systems, electrical equipment, and electrical and pneumatic control systems.

Balance heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems and related equipment.

Read, interpret, and work from plans and specifications.

Learn to operate a computer and related software.

Maintain routine records.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Climb ladders.

Lift, load and unload heavy objects.

Reach overhead, above shoulders and horizontally.

Bend at waist, kneel or crouch.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Five years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems of up to one-hundred-ton capacity with at least one year at the journey level.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver’s license and the ability to be insured and maintain standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance.

Possession of a valid EPA Rule 608 Technician’s Universal Certification.

Successful completion of the Energy Management Familiarity and Response Training programs utilized by the District within five months of date of hire.

OTHER
Incumbent may be required to work a shifting workweek. Workweek will include five (5) consecutive days that may start and end on any day of the week.

CURRENT VACANCY: Three (3) full-time permanent positions (8 hrs/day, 12 mos/yr), with full benefits, at the Facilities Maintenance Department.

Minimum Requirement:
Five years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems of up to one-hundred-ton capacity with at least one year at the journey level.
License and Certificate:

Salary: Salary amounts listed above indicate the fourth and last steps of the range. New employees in this classification are hired at the fourth step of the salary schedule.
Probationary period: 130 days of paid service.
