The Position
Join the Beaverton City Library Community Engagement Team as our Summer Reading Intern and get a real-world introduction to library work! The Summer Reading Intern is a position that helps us with the Summer Reading Program (SRP), training and overseeing teen volunteers, maintaining the summer reading books, and planning and facilitating storytimes at an outreach site. The internship will run from June 9 (or June 16, depending on intern availability) through August 16, 2025.
You’ll gain valuable professional library experience while sharing the joy of the Summer Reading Program with kids, teens, and their families.
The intern in this position will have a chance to gain skills and experience in:
- Leadership through training and overseeing volunteers
- Outreach, programming, and/or storytime
- Customer service and answering reference questions at a library service desk
- Library collection development.
- Planning and organization
- Communication in a professional library setting
- Library workflows, projects, and professional responsibilities
- Other opportunities possible depending on interests
The ideal candidate must be:
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Able to inventory and unpack books
- Responsible and dependable
- Able to complete tasks in a timely manner
- Willing to learn new skills and teach others
- Strong people skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word
- Knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications
This is a part-time, seasonal position that will be scheduled for 20 hours each week. The schedule may include weekend work. There is one vacancy.

Responsibilities
- Train and oversee teen volunteers and coordinate and schedule substitute volunteers.
- Assist with the Summer Reading Program, including collecting and organizing SRP statistics and marketing the library’s summer offerings.
- Unpack, inventory, and later repack the summer reading books – includes moving small boxes.
- Assist with storytimes at a local park.
- Perform professional library work under the supervision of a librarian, which could include:
- Outreach to a community partner location
- Observing and assisting at library reference desks
- Collection development for a small part of a library collection
- Planning activities for a library program or presenting pop up programs
- Complete other projects and performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
- High school junior or senior, or currently enrolled in a college or university; and
- At least 16 years old by the internship start date; and
- Able to pass reference checks and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Compensation
