Organization Overview

The Cardiometabolic Health communications team is embedded within the Lilly Cardiometabolic Health business unit. It leads external communications, including creative brand and unbranded campaigns, and bold storytelling to engage key stakeholders, media relations and issues management to help the business achieve its goals.

Responsibilities

The Senior Director-Cardiometabolic Health communications is a critical member of the communications team. This position is responsible for developing and leading the tactical execution of the Cardiometabolic Health communications strategy. Specifically, this role will spearhead implementation of external communications efforts including earned media, thought leadership, advocacy and activations and campaigns, while providing strategic support to other communication team members.

The Senior Director will report to the Associate Vice President of Communications for Cardiometabolic Health. The Senior Director will work with U.S. and global business colleagues, including marketing, clinical development, medical affairs, corporate communications and investor relations. The candidate must approach the work with a Team Lilly mindset – in other words, demonstrate flexibility and a commitment to supporting the greater good.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead and direct communications efforts for the Cardiometabolic Health business, ensuring alignment with strategic business objectives.
  • Develop and execute creative communication campaigns for patients, caregivers, and health care teams that effectively support business goals.
  • Create and implement critical communication plans to support data and regulatory achievements.
  • Serve as the primary communications advisor for company spokespersons and other internal business partners, providing strategic counsel and guidance.
  • Oversee the work of associate directors and provide senior counsel in managing ongoing collaboration with PR agencies.
  • Develop and edit communications for media such as press releases, internal Q&As, videos and fact sheets, ensuring clarity and impact.
  • Lead media training, communications counsel and coaching of internal business partners, enhancing their ability to effectively engage with media.
  • Conduct and facilitate interviews with local, national media outlets.
  • Anticipate, prioritize, and prepare to manage possible negative issues in the media, addressing challenges to protect the company’s reputation.
  • Offer miscellaneous support of communication projects, including writing, issues management and critical thinking.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with cross-functional internal and external partners, fostering collaboration.
  • Role model effective counsel to business leaders by listening, understanding, and providing credible expertise, relevant insights, and transparent feedback.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of communications experience (journalism, public relations, other communications roles, etc.) with a strong understanding of both traditional and social media and a vision for new innovative ways of communicating.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Experience supporting a business unit and achieving crucial communications goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and consensus building.
  • Proven expertise in developing and executing strategic and creative communications plans, including digital and social media campaigns.
  • Knowledge of diabetes, obesity and related metabolic diseases, as well as Lilly’s products and pipeline is a plus.
  • Strong influence and relationship building skills with business partners.
  • Experience managing interactions with national and local media, trade, and social media, and/or professional/trade and third-party organizations required, including interacting with A-list media and serving as a spokesperson.
  • Experience in collaborating with and effectively guiding third-party vendors, including PR agencies.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, including executive communications and speechwriting.
  • Ability to manage issues/crises effectively.
  • Expert judgment in critical decision-making on issues impacting reputation and is recognized as a trusted advisor.
  • Exceptional creative communications skills – written and verbal, as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be agile and innovative, leveraging an agile and creative mindset to adapt to change and drive innovative value creation, continuous process improvement, and proactive learning through new technology, processes, and people.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$150,000 – $220,000

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
