The Position
The Beaverton City Library seeks an experienced Public Service Supervisor who is passionate about serving the community and supporting a talented team of staff. This position oversees reference services and programming for all ages, manages the library’s makerspace, and supervises a team of nine. The Public Services supervisor also leads library-wide initiatives and committees as a member of the library leadership team.

THE TEAM
The Beaverton City Library’s Public Services team includes Access Services, Reference Services, Programming, and the Branch Library, all under one umbrella. The team provides and iterates exceptional service to patrons–from getting a library card to finding their next great read, exploring the makerspace, or connecting with new friends in a program. We strive to keep our community at the center of decisions and the work we do. In this role your focus will be makerspace, reference services, and programming, but you’ll also work collaboratively across the library to support the library’s vision of being the foundation for an engaged and thriving community.

UPCOMING PROJECTS
Key projects for the first 6-12 months in this position include:

  • Participating in a library-wide consultant-led strategic planning process.
  • Developing and delivering training for staff.
  • Identifying and implementing improvements to the event planning process.
  • Working with community partners to deliver engaging events.

This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy. The regular work schedule will be Sunday-Thursday with a weekly evening shift on Tuesday until 7:15pm. Interviews will take place in July through early August.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily public service operations at the Main Library, including service desks, public technology, makerspace, and event programming.
  • Build staff schedules for 7-day coverage and provide guidance, support, and direction to scheduler.
  • Support staff through difficult patron interactions, focusing on safety, an empathetic approach, and de-escalation.
  • Hire and supervise staff, assigning and reviewing work.
  • Provide regular feedback and coaching to employees. Respond to employee grievances and oversee disciplinary processes.
  • Participate actively as a member of the library leadership team.
  • Plan, execute, and monitor projects. Use statistics, reports, and other measurement tools to ensure objectives are met.
  • Prepare and monitor the Public Services budget. Authorize purchases and payments for supplies, equipment, and contracted services.
  • Train staff in alignment with the library’s service philosophy and to meet required technical competencies.
  • Stay up to date on current and emerging technology tools and trends. Train and guide library users and staff on technology tools and services.
  • Promote public awareness of library services and programs. Develop and maintain community partnerships.
  • Support the library’s volunteers and volunteer engagement program.
  • Promote city and library values, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Support a culture of accountability within the organization and actively promote the value of respect in a multicultural society.

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited program, and
  • Three years of experience in a supervisory or lead role, including
  • One year of leadership experience in a library; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing and special requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the city’s driving standards.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Compensation
Wage range: $6,036.55 – $8,089.59 monthly

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience provided in the employment application. New hires who meet the minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps within the posted range may be offered to those who have additional years of experience that is directly related to the position.
