OBAYASHI CORPORATION is seeking an experienced Tunnel Safety Manager to oversee safety operations on our tunneling projects. The Tunnel Safety Manager will ensure that the necessary tools, equipment, policies, procedures, and programs are in place to support safe work practices for all employees. This position goes beyond simply adhering to regulations; it involves the continuous assessment and improvement of safety protocols, thorough training programs, and effective communication strategies. The role requires traveling to various project sites across the United States and possibly being assigned to a specific project.
Responsibilities:
- Continuously monitors the Health & Safety (H&S) program against trends, new industry practices, legislative changes, business changes, and exposure changes to ensure that the program stays current and continues to evolve.
- Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of the workplace and help manage the hazard recognition processes and corrective actions.
- Monitor and record air flow readings and the ability to understand gas readings and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Coordinate and conduct safety training programs for employees.
- Investigate accidents and incidents to determine causes and preventive measures.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training sessions.
- Collaborate with management to promote a safety culture.
- Traveling to the project job sites and the company’s subsidiaries.
Education & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is typically preferred.
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in a safety-related role within the tunneling and mining/heavy civil construction industry.
- Experience in conducting safety training sessions.
- A valid CAL-OSHA gas tester’s license and safety rep card. Equivalency can be discussed.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification is required.

- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in safety management software and tools.
- Understanding of safety regulations and compliance standards.
- Ability to conduct thorough safety audits and inspections.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in MS Office, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Other:
- Requires navigation of active construction site
- Frequent travel to job sites for safety inspections, meetings, training, and other Safety services
- Able to work varied hours
Anticipated Salary Range: $115,000 – $177,000 USD / Year

The offered salary will be determined by factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and the relevant local market conditions. The salary range reflects our expectations for this role within California. Compensation may differ in other states based on regional market conditions and applicable regulations. We are committed to offering fair and competitive pay across all locations. Additionally, the salary may be adjusted if the candidate is required to relocate to a different state.
