Who we’re looking for
Toyota’s Powertrain Evaluation team is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Engineer II for EV battery design and evaluation.
The primary responsibility of this role includes the evaluation of battery design, safety systems, and all components including:
- Durability confirmation.
- Performance evaluation.
- Certification testing.
- Data analysis and test reporting including conclusions and next steps.
- Validation of battery (cell, module, and pack) component functionality and reflection to iterative design.
- Battery evaluation program management.
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Battery Evaluation, the person in this role will support the Powertrain’s objective to build “World Class Powertrains in North America”.
What you’ll be doing
- Design Liaison: Liaising with the Design function to ensure effective planning and execution of battery and component evaluation activities.
- Test Planning: Developing evaluation test plans and schedules to permit battery designs, sub-system hardware, and component design changes to be evaluated in parallel.
- Resource Planning: Ensuring facility capacity (including outsource), budget availability and clear test priorities.
- Test Execution: Coordination and execution of battery setups and instrumentation, component and durability test management and assistance, teardowns, and part evaluations to determine acceptability and compliance with test standards and criteria. In addition, follow-up to ensure recommendations are understood.
- Team Communication: Maintaining a high level of engagement with the management team, test technicians, and design engineers to ensure test quality and schedule adherence.
- Reporting: Preparing and delivering professional technical reports and presentations to TMC and TMNA management.
- Capability Improvement: Identifying and proposing opportunities for evaluation enhancements, plus leading improvement initiatives to build increased evaluation capability within TMNA.
- Collaborating: Between internal NA Departments including Design, Quality, Calibration, Testing, Facilities, Purchasing, Toyota Plants (NAMC’s), and with Toyota HQ in Japan (TMC), to build some of the safest, most advanced, and most reliable vehicles on the planet.
What you bring
- Bachelor of Science (or above) in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering degree.
- Proficient in the use of data acquisition equipment and analysis tools.
- Demonstrable ability to successfully manage all aspects of an evaluation project including planning, work scheduling, task prioritization, budgeting, and technical report writing.
- Knowledge of Li-Ion battery safety risks & mitigation strategies.
- Data management and analysis experience.
- Ability to read and understand engineering design drawings.
- Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite.
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
- Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally up to 20%.
Added bonus if you have
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience conducting EV battery testing.
- Effective communication and presentation skills.
- Team-oriented thinking, structured problem-solving, and a “can-do” attitude.
- Understanding of types of EV battery chemistry and/or pack design.
- Experience with Toyota continuous improvement tools (TBP, JKK, OJD, etc.).
- Experience using Toyota-specific data acquisition equipment (i.e. Panel).
- Ability to communicate in Japanese language.
