Job Summary
The Teppan Grill Chef is responsible for preparing and cooking meals on a teppanyaki grill while delivering an engaging and interactive dining experience for guests. This role requires a strong knowledge of Japanese cuisine, precision in knife skills, and the ability to perform with consistency and professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
The position supports the restaurant’s commitment to high-quality food preparation, guest satisfaction, and traditional teppanyaki presentation techniques. The Teppan Grill Chef works closely with kitchen staff, servers, and management to ensure food is prepared efficiently, safely, and in accordance with restaurant standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook high-quality teppanyaki dishes, including meats, seafood, and vegetables, in front of guests.
- Deliver an engaging dining experience with precise knife skills, showmanship, and interactive cooking techniques.
- Maintain a strong knowledge of traditional Japanese ingredients, flavors, and cooking methods.
- Ensure food safety, hygiene, and cleanliness in the teppanyaki grill area.
- Manage portion control, food preparation, and inventory for teppanyaki dishes.
- Adhere to restaurant policies and health department regulations.
- Collaborate with kitchen staff and servers to ensure timely food service.
- Address customer inquiries, dietary restrictions, and special requests with professionalism and efficiency.
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience as a Teppan Grill Chef, Hibachi Chef, or similar role preferred.
- Expert-level knife skills and proficiency in Japanese grilling techniques.
- Ability to perform teppanyaki tricks (e.g., onion volcano, egg juggling, utensil flipping).
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.
- Strong knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs.
- Culinary certification or training is a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this role:
- Ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 8-10 hours per shift)
- Frequent walking, bending, reaching, and twisting in a high-energy kitchen and dining area
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- Repetitive use of hands and wrists for chopping, slicing, and cooking
- Exposure to heat, open flames, and sharp kitchen equipment
- Must be able to perform precise hand and arm movements for grill work and teppanyaki presentation
- Ability to speak clearly and interact with guests in a busy dining setting
