Position Summary

The English Department seeks a graduate student to work in the role of NeMLA Graduate Assistant on projects related to the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA), a professional academic association focused on literatures, languages, and the interdisciplinary humanities.

The NeMLA Graduate Assistant would support NeMLA’s executive director and associate executive director on a variety of administrative work. Duties may include but are not limited to:

  1. Assisting with the annual convention (preparation, logistics, set-up/breakdown, operations, and possibly coordinating other staffers),
  2. General office work (e.g. database management, inventory tracking, filing, organization),
  3. Social Media posting,
  4. Researching and gathering information to support executive decision-making (e.g. tracking and organizing documents and information, research new vendors or products, etc.),
  5. General communication between the association and its members and officers or board of directors,
  6. Preparing content for the newsletter (including researching, writing, editing, and coordinating with contributors),
  7. Other special projects and duties as assigned.

Graduate Assistant will be working in collaboration with supervising faculty member Dr. Derek DiMatteo, associate executive director of NeMLA and assistant professor of English at Gannon.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a Gannon University graduate student in good standing with their department with a GPA above 3.2, and will have most or all of the following skills, experiences, or abilities:

  1. Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written).
  2. Highly organized and disciplined with strong time-management.
  3. Attentive to details.
  4. Self-directed, independent, and able to follow instructions unsupervised.
  5. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external professionals.
  6. Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneDrive).
  7. Reliable, honest; must be in good academic standing with no prior academic integrity violations; required to adhere to strict confidentiality policies.

Preferred Qualifications

Would be great if you also had one or more of these skills:

  1. Social Media management experience.
  2. HTML & CSS, and WordPress or other CMS backend administration.
  3. Proficiency with Adobe creative suite (especially InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, and Illustrator).
  4. Intermediate or advanced proficiency in non-English languages (Portuguese, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, French, Spanish, German).

Physical Demands

  1. May be asked to travel to convention location in another city and to assist in set-up and breakdown of posters, projectors, tables, etc.
  2. Should be able to bend, lift, push and pull to assist with moving boxes and supplies in various areas throughout the Palumbo Academic Center.
  3. May be asked to lift up to 30-50 pounds (e.g. boxed or bagged items).
  4. May be asked to transport items across campus or to load items into a vehicle (e.g. using a dolly or hand truck).
