Position Summary

The Academic Manager provides pedagogical leadership and curriculum development for the Intensive English Program and custom international education programs within Global Grants and Academic Programs (GAP). This position ensures high-quality, innovative, project-based learning experiences for diverse international constituents including degree-seeking students, short-term program participants, visiting scholars, and grant participants. The Academic Manager collaborates across GAP to develop engaging, academically grounded educational experiences aligned with global language learning standards. The Academic Manager provides instructional support during high-demand periods or special program needs.

Job Duties

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Applied Linguistics, Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field.

Required Experience

5-7 years of progressive experience in language teaching and program leadership.

Demonstrated experience includes:

  • ESL/EFL teaching at post-secondary or intensive English program level
  • Curriculum development and instructional design for language programs
  • Teacher mentorship, supervision, or professional development facilitation
  • Experience with project-based learning or innovative pedagogical approaches
  • Work with diverse international student populations

Equivalent combination of education and experience, that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Required Additional Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of second language acquisition and language pedagogy
  • Proficiency with project-based learning methodologies
  • Familiarity with global language proficiency frameworks (ACTFL, CEFR)
  • Strong curriculum development and assessment design skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations
  • Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic program environments
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills

Preferred Education

MA, PhD or EdD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Language Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field.

Preferred Experience

7+ years of progressive program leadership experience including intensive English program management, international education program development, and grant-funded programs. Experience with world languages (Japanese preferred) and short-term international programs. Higher education international programs office experience required.

Preferred License/Certification

  • TESOL or TEFL certification
  • Training in classroom observation methodologies (e.g., COLT, TBLT observation protocols)

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience with multiple language teaching methodologies and frameworks
  • Knowledge of higher education accreditation and compliance requirements
  • Grant writing or program development experience
  • Familiarity with study abroad and international exchange program models
  • Experience with diverse program formats (intensive, short-term, semester-long, custom)
  • Professional network in international education field
  • Experience with program assessment and quality assurance
