VCU’s School of Education (SOE) seeks Teachers for the Japanese and Latin Language Academies who embrace and will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities. We are excited to invite qualified candidates from with different perspectives for the position. VCU GLA dates: June 28-July 12, 2026. All staff members are expected to arrive two days prior to the opening ceremonies. All staff will be housed at a residential facility on the VCU campus. Parking for the academy days and any prior required says is included for all staff.

Duties & Responsibilities: GLA teachers at a Governor’s World Language Academy will:

  • Provide World language instruction and/or content instruction in the World language during a two-week period for 38-45 talented and motivated World language students.
  • Participate in any scheduled pre-Academy professional development training sessions.
  • Organize and assist with Academy activities both prior to and during the Academy in collaboration with the Academy director.
  • Assist with and/or participate in cocurricular activities, i.e., afternoon activities, field trips, sporting activities, and evening programs.
  • Attend pre-Academy planning meetings and all meetings held during the Academy program.
  • Remain on site after the closing of the Academy until all check-out processes designated by the program coordinator have been completed.
  • Provide supervision and leadership for the students throughout the entire program.

One teacher will be hired as lead teacher and, in addition to the above duties, will:

  • Assist the director in preparing pre-Academy documents as needed (such as: room assignments, student groupings, student informational packets, etc.).
  • Coordinate with the lead resident advisor to ensure management of the activities of the resident advisors.
  • Provide colleagues with teaching and learning strategies in order to achieve curriculum goals and objectives.

Perform other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary by the director to contribute to the goals and objectives of the Academy.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Native or near-native proficiency in the World language of the Academy.
  • Successful experience in instructing and motivating advanced language students.
  • Experience in providing leadership and a variety of activities for students.
  • Experience in or strong familiarity with immersion teaching.
  • Knowledge of language proficiency levels and Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Good organizational ability.
  • A strong ability to work with a team.
  • Unlimited energy and enthusiasm.

The ability to pass a criminal background check is required for employ.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with the Governor’s Language Academies or similar programs.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • First-aid training.

Salary Range: Lead Teacher: $5,500. Teacher: $4,000.

FLSA Exemption Status: Exempt

Hours per Week: Varies

Flexible Work Arrangement: Fully Onsite

University Job Title: Lead Teacher or Teacher. We expect to hire 2 Japanese teachers and 4 Latin teachers.
