DUTIES
ANNUAL SALARY
$112,710 to $125,634; $142,631 to $158,980; $114,380 to $167,207; and $131,397 to $192,137

- The salary range covers multiple pay grades within the class. Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions.
DUTIES
Polygraph Examiners administer polygraph examinations to police candidates, sworn and civilian employees seeking assignments to specialized units, and suspects or witnesses in criminal investigations using computerized polygraph instruments; and, as appropriate, interview and interrogate suspects, victims, witnesses and other persons involved in City related investigations; prepare written reports in order to document polygraph examination questions and results, and testify in court as an expert witness.
NOTES:
- All entry-level positions in this class have been designated as temporary training positions in accordance with Civil Service Rule 5.30. Employment in such positions is not to exceed twelve (12) months, during which the trainee must successfully complete a comprehensive training program consisting of both classroom and on-the-job training. Upon completion of the training program, employees will receive regular appointments to the class of Polygraph Examiner and begin a six-month probationary period.
- Candidates may be subject to working evening, weekend, and holiday shifts on an on-call basis.
REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)
- Graduation from an approved Polygraph school accredited by the American Polygraph Association or completion of a U.S. Government Polygraph Training Program; and
- Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university.
PROCESS NOTES
- Applicants filing under Requirement No.1 must submit proof of qualifying degree or successful completion of a U.S. Government Polygraph Training Program at the time of filing. The copy of the qualifying degree or training certification must be attached to the on-line application BEFORE the application is submitted. If the qualifying degree or training certification is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, it will not be available to the City and applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted it.
- As a condition of employment, a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required. Applicants will be disqualified and candidates will not be eligible for hire if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI) or DWI in any state or jurisdiction. Notice of disqualification or ineligibility for hire may be issued by the City of Los Angeles at any time before a final job offer is extended.

Civil Service Rule 4.2
In accordance with Civil Service Rule 4.2, all applicants who apply may not be tested in this examination. To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles who meet the minimum requirements, or are on a reserve list. 2) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.
SELECTION PROCESS
After meeting minimum qualifications, candidates will be scheduled for the following:

The examination for Polygraph Examiner will consist entirely of a Training and Experience Questionnaire. In the Training and Experience Questionnaire, the following competencies may be evaluated: Analytical Ability, Attention To Detail, Stress Tolerance, Interpersonal Skills, Written Communication, and Job Knowledge to include: principles of polygraph administration and procedure; interrogation techniques; analysis and interpretation of data; and other necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
Candidates’ Training and Experience Questionnaire will be administered on-line. Candidates invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps on how to complete the on-line Training and Experience Questionnaire. Candidates who fail to complete the on-line Training and Experience Questionnaire as instructed may be disqualified. The candidate’s responses to the Polygraph Examiner Training and Experience Questionnaire and job application information will be submitted to an expert review panel for evaluation. The expert review panel will assign a numeric score to each candidate based on an assessment of each candidate’s qualifications, as described on the Training and Experience Questionnaire. Unsolicited supplemental information will not be submitted to the review panel.
