Summary: New Mexico State University invites applications for the position of Full Professor and Department Head in the department of Languages & Linguistics in the College of Arts & Sciences. NMSU seeks an experienced and inspiring leader with a vision for the field(s), and a long-term commitment to teaching and research excellence. PhD in a relevant field, as well as demonstrated success in academic administration and/or leadership, are required. Strong management skills are important, as are effective communication, creative problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate both within and beyond the department. The Department Head also serves on the leadership team for the College of Arts & Sciences, and engages in some teaching and research activities.

Recently classified as R1, NMSU is a land grant, Hispanic Serving Institution in the El Paso-Juárez-Las Cruces-Borderplex. Our department offers the BA in Linguistics as well as in Spanish, French, and German languages and literatures. The Department offers supplemental majors in Latin American Studies, Chicano Studies, and Linguistics; our interdisciplinary minors include International Studies and East Asian Studies. The Department also teaches courses in Portuguese, Japanese, and Spanish for Heritage Learners. At the graduate level, the Department offers the MA in Spanish and a Graduate Certificate in Teaching Spanish for Heritage Language Learners, both available either in person or online (through NMSU-Global). The Department also participates in the College’s new interdisciplinary PhD in Transborder and Global Human Dynamics. NMSU seeks a Head who can lead and advocate for all of our various programs, while supporting faculty research and fostering student success.

Classification Standard Duties:The Department Head will maintain high standards for research, teaching, outreach, faculty mentorship, and service-including a focus on recruitment and retention and involvement with alumni relations and fundraising. The successful candidate will be a role model for the department, a transparent and collaborative leader, and an advocate for the department both internally and externally to NMSU. Applicants should share our commitment to interdisciplinarity, and to nurturing respect for differences. The successful applicant will work with us to create a welcoming and supporting environment in the classroom, department, and university.The Department Head will also serve on the leadership team of the College of Arts & Sciences, supporting interdisciplinary opportunities and collaboratively working with the other Department Heads in the College to advance the missions of the Department, College and University.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency

Required:
• PhD in a core area of the department (or a closely related field)
• Rank of Full Professor, or qualified to be appointed at the rank of Full Professor in the Department
• Tenure, or a portfolio of research, teaching & mentoring, and service compatible with tenure in the Department
• Demonstrated success in academic administration and/or leadership

Preferred:
• Demonstrated ability to advocate for complex interdisciplinary units
• Demonstrated ability to work with student populations reflecting the backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of New Mexico, as appropriate to our Land Grant mission
• Demonstrated commitment to outreach and to student engagement

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative and organizational duties encompass data analytics, space surveys, program maintenance, and managing enrollment. Teaching involves delivering three courses annually. Responsibilities also include department leadership and strategic planning, engagement in research and scholarly activities, and providing service to the department and college. Additionally, preparing department reports and supporting and evaluating faculty constitute essential duties.
