Description

The Department of Religious Studies at Brown University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of Japanese religions, with an emphasis on Japanese Buddhism in the pre-1900 period. The position will begin on July 1, 2027 and is open to scholars who use any humanities methodologies, including but not limited to those associated with religious studies, history, philosophy, art history, and literature, as well as emerging or interdisciplinary methods. The regular teaching load is three courses per year, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in their area(s) of expertise as well as in one or more of our graduate areas, including Religions of East Asia. Expertise in pre-1900 Japanese Buddhism is required, and we warmly encourage applicants who are able to teach or conduct research on a range of Japanese religions across different periods.

Qualifications

A PhD in a related field is required by the time of appointment. The University and Department place a high priority on research excellence and high-quality instruction. We seek applicants who will contribute to the broader intellectual life of the department and university.
