Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept
The Department of World Languages and Literatures plays a central role in preparing the students of Portland State University to function in the global community. Because we believe that language is central to that ability, we offer instruction in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Vietnamese. The Department is committed to teaching for proficiency. All of our language classes are designed to develop functional skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for eventual use in a broad variety of real-world settings.
Position Summary
The American Sign Language ( ASL ) program offers approximately 40 ASL courses during the year, serving approximately 300 students per quarter during fall, winter and spring. We invite applicants to join our part-time adjunct instructor pool to teach first- / second-year ASL courses during the year to meet the needs of the students.

Our current opening is for the Winter 2025 classes, these classes meet in person:

Winter 2024:

  • ASL 102-002 MW 1130-1320
  • ASL 102-003 MW 1400-1550

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach first- and/or second-year American Sign Language courses according to the needs of the department.
  • Maintain regular student hours (office hours) for students. Teaching faculty members are required to schedule a minimum of 2 hours of office hours per week during the term(s) that they teach, and be available to their students by appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in a related field
  • Two years teaching ASL at the college level
  • Native or near-native fluency in ASL and in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • American Sign Language Teachers Association Certification
