Job Description

What We Want

The Bilingual Language Leader will lead small discussion groups of approximately 5-10 students in one of the following languages, Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, etc. The Bilingual Language Leader will work under an established protocol, with learning flexibility, to provide students with language instruction to help prepare students to pass (with a score of Intermediate Low or better) their foreign language requirement in the form of an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) proctored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, a degree requirement within the Master of International Affairs degree.

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.

Other Requirements and Factors: This is a part-time temporary/casual position with an expected workload of 4-8 hours per week from September to May. Workload and language need will be assessed on a semester-to-semester basis.

Essential Duties/Tasks

Tutoring Sessions

  • Host discussion group meetings 1-2 times per week online.
  • Assess language proficiency of assigned students.
  • Help improve and refine students’ oral proficiency in the target language through conversations held in selected language.

Administrative

  • Create or modify protocol to language specific learning pathways that convey linguistic and cultural.
  • Coordinates with International Affairs Language Program Coordinator to report progress and issues as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED or higher degree.
  • Native or Bilingual in English and a selected language such as Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working with graduate students.
  • Experience leading conversations.
  • Knowledge of the Oral Proficiency Interview by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
  • Experience providing constructive feedback.
  • Understanding the culture of language being taught.
  • Preferred professional experience as a language analyst or linguist in government agency.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bilingual in English and a selected language such as Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, etc.
  • Native or certified advanced speaker in selected language (Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, etc.).
  • Good organizational and communication skills.

Welcome to the Department of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.
