Overview

HarperCollins seeks an Editor with a passion for manga, manhwa, and manhua to join its team. The Editor will report to the VP/Publisher of HarperAlley and will acquire and edit a select number of titles while bringing their own fresh ideas to the table. The highly motivated candidate will have a collaborative spirit and work across the division with a creative and dynamic group to publish groundbreaking books that will resonate with readers around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire and edit approximately 15-20 titles per year.
  • Have a deep understanding of the manga industry in the US market across all age categories and formats while collaborating with the in-house editorial team to shape the list.
  • Cultivate, foster, and maintain relationships with licensors, agents, scouts, and creators from Japan.
  • Communicate with licensors and creators from Japan alongside in-house and Global HarperCollins teams to ensure projects uphold standards of the highest quality while also adhering to licensor guidelines.
  • Edit manuscripts, sketches, final artwork, and cover designs.
  • Shepherd materials through the production process and oversee all aspects of the publication process by collaborating with Editorial, Design, Production, Marketing, and Sales departments throughout a projects’ development.
  • Hire and manage freelancers involved in the production of publications.
  • Share, read, and evaluate potential projects and contribute thoughtful feedback in Editorial meetings.
  • Write copy, including title sheets, flap copy, selling copy, and catalog copy; review marketing and publicity materials.
  • Conducts sales research, creates P&Ls, drafts contract requests.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4-5 years’ editorial experience in the graphic novel, manga, and/or book publishing industries.
  • Relationships with key creators, publishers, and agencies in the manga and anime spaces.
  • Experience with story development and art direction and ability to share critical yet thoughtful feedback with creators and licensors throughout the lifecycle of a book.
  • Preferred candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively in both Japanese and English.
  • Strong writing, communication, time management, and project management skills.
  • College-level degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and understanding of Adobe Creative Suite and ClipStudio strongly preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of social media platforms a plus.
  • Occasional travel required.

The salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate’s experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
