Duties and Responsibilities (*denotes essential functions):

  • *This position serves as the Processing Archivist and oversees the processing activities of ‘Ulu’ulu: The Henry Ku’ualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive of Hawai’i.
  • *Perform processing of archival motion picture film, videotape, audio recordings and paper-based collection material, including arrangement, description, cleaning and rehousing.
  • *Assign technical and descriptive metadata to collection materials using media asset management system.
  • *Inspect and survey all incoming collection materials and make recommendations for processing and preservation priorities.
  • *Create archival inventories, finding aids, and reports to make collection materials accessible for research.
  • *Accession collection items to generate unique IDs to track the preservation lifecycles of individual items.
  • *Maintain collection control in the archive’s vault by assigning locations and monitoring collection movement in and out of the vault, including shipments to preservation vendors.
  • *Create and implement standard processing procedures and workflows according to the archival industry’s best practices and train appropriate staff.
  • *Develop processing projects for the archive’s internship and volunteer programs and train and supervise interns and practicum students.
  • Attend and present at national professional archival conferences and workshops about archival processing in order to keep abreast of industry standards and their application to ‘Ulu’ulu.
  • Compile monthly and annual statistics, analyze results, and run reports related to archival processing.
  • Assist with preservation and reformatting activities including monitoring environmental conditions of stacks and vault and working with analog videotape monitoring and digitizing equipment.
  • Assist with administrative duties for the daily operation of the archives including maintaining and ordering office and archival supplies, communication with building facilities staff, and communication with UHWO administration.
  • Assist with descriptive cataloging, captioning and transcription as needed.
  • Provide reference services and answer research-related questions as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Arts and Sciences with major coursework related to library and information science, creative media and/or film, or related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for processing activities in an academic library or archival setting; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of moving image archiving and preservation as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with processing activities in an academic library or archival setting.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of the film and video production process and materials associated with production.
  2. Knowledge of Hawaiian media history, culture, and language.
  3. Experience with handling, inspection, and identification of various film formats (e.g. 8mm, Super8, 16mm, 35mm), and videotape formats in a wide variety of obsolete playback systems (e.g. 2″ Quad, 1″, 3/4″ Umatic, Betacam SP).
  4. Experience with Recollect media asset management software, or other similar content management system.
  5. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  6. Evidence of strong critical thinking skills.
  7. Experience in a collaborative and collegial setting.
  8. Productive attitude and enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences.
  2. Translation experience with ‘Olelo Hawai’i or other local community languages (e.g. Japanese, Tagalog, Korean).
  3. Experience with nitrate film handling and shipping.
  4. Experience with ClimateNotebook or other environmental analysis software.
  5. Experience with Augusta ADA, Aegisub, or other voice-to-text and captioning software.
  6. Knowledge of digital video and audio file formats.
  7. Ability to lift 20-30 pound boxes.
