Description
The Manager of Human Resources provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the Human Resources function across all Marukai locations, including retail stores, central kitchen, and corporate offices. This role is responsible for driving people strategies that align with business objectives, building a strong company culture, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws. The HR Director leads a team of HR professionals and partners closely with senior leadership to attract, retain, and develop talent that supports Marukai’s long-term growth and values.
Job Responsibilities:
• Lead the development and execution of HR strategies that support business goals, including workforce planning, talent management, employee relations, training, and organizational development.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of the HR department, including HR compliance, employee engagement, compensation, benefits, safety, and policy development.
• Partner with executive leadership and department heads to provide HR consultation, resolve business challenges, and guide organizational change.
• Ensure compliance with employment laws and internal policies across all locations, including California labor law, wage and hour regulations, and OSHA/safety standards.
• Oversee employee relations matters, including investigations, performance issues, terminations, and workplace conflict resolution.
• Build and maintain a consistent and inclusive company culture aligned with Marukai’s mission, vision, and values.
• Lead initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), employee recognition, and workforce morale.
• Direct HR reporting and analytics, using data to support decision-making on retention, turnover, productivity, and training effectiveness.
• Conduct regular audits of HR practices to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and company policies.
• Oversee HRIS functionality and process improvements (UKG/KRONOS); ensure data integrity and reporting accuracy.
• Lead, coach, and develop the HR team; create a culture of accountability, service, and continuous improvement.
• Represent HR in cross-functional projects and leadership meetings.
• Manage budgets and resources for HR operations and programs.

Requirements
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; Master’s degree or HR certification (SPHR or SHRM-SCP) preferred.
• Minimum 8-10 years of progressive HR leadership experience, with at least 3 years in a multi-site or retail environment.
• In-depth knowledge of California employment law and HR best practices.
• Demonstrated experience in HRIS management, payroll, employee relations, and recruitment.
• Proven experience managing HR teams and leading through organizational change.
• Strong communication, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills; able to influence at all levels of the organization.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience with labor cost management and HR analytics is a plus.
• Knowledge of Japanese large scale corporation culture or operations is a plus but not required.
Certificates & Licenses:
• SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) preferred but not required
Language Ability:
• Speak, Read and Write English fluently is must
• Japanese bilingual is required.
