Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The faculty of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, non-tenure track position at the rank of Instructor of Japanese to begin August 16, 2025. The position is a 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
The successful candidate will teach four courses per semester (eight courses per year) in the Japanese language from introductory through advanced levels. Capability in teaching reading and writing skills involving phonetic alphabets and kanji Chinese characters is preferred. The successful candidate will maintain an excellent record of teaching, while actively engaging in various instructional responsibilities with full participation in program affairs and service. Experience with leading study abroad program is a plus.
Required Education and Experience
Candidates must have a minimum qualification of a Master’s degree or higher in Japanese or a related field, completed by August 15, 2025, with evidence of two years of successful teaching experience at the college level, and native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Japanese, or East Asian Studies, or related field. Willingness to direct study abroad programs.
