Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties
Basic Job Purpose/Function
Use productive tutoring techniques to provide individual learning assistance to MHCC students. Deliver additional and clarifying information to students and support the specialized training, expertise, and competencies of the professional instructor and the course content and learning outcomes.
Essential Duties
- Provide academic assistance to students that supports MHCC course content and instructional methods; review and clarify course-specific learning objectives by providing study skills’ strategies; review course materials, assignments and exam materials, ideas for papers and course assignments and work on solutions to individual learning challenges.
- Support effective instruction by tutoring students on both a scheduled and drop-in basis, individually and/or in small groups, facilitating discussions, reviewing class projects, reinforcing curriculum and content learning objectives, discussing test preparation strategies and providing homework assistance.
- Assist students in identifying, clarifying and reinforcing academic and career goals through the development of decision-making skills, developing awareness of educational resources and encouraging self-direction in educational planning.
- Communicate and collaborate with faculty, student support services and other college staff to mentor and retain students by conducting individual student assessments, developing customized learning interventions and exploring additional, non-instructional, support services.
- Attend and participate in content area, college and academic success strategies courses and campus events to promote services to students, make connections with students and faculty, and familiarize self with target curricula; prepare and distribute a variety of brochures, program materials, forms and documents for distribution and/or presentation, as needed.
- Help students to access needed services; provide support and referral assistance for students experiencing family, personal or economic crises which may impact academic performance.
- Collect, distribute, provide, review and correct course-specific instructional materials as provided by students and instructors.
- Provide routine clerical support related to student tutoring programs and objectives; operate a variety of office equipment, hardware, software and other technologies.
Additional Duties
- May participate in evaluating students’ broad learning needs, suggesting and providing additional materials or assessments beyond the course requirements.
- May proctor make-up exams and make-up class sessions or workshops for students, as requested.
- May provide work direction and guidance to non-instructional staff, as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Computer Skills, etc.)
- Bachelor’s degree in Japanese or a closely related discipline
- One (1) year of experience as a teacher, teaching assistant, tutor, social worker, counselor, or similar activity
Any other combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Additional Requirements
- By the end of the first year of employment, employees in this classification are required to successfully complete Levels II and III College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Tutor Certification or Tutor Training Course

Working Conditions and Important Information
Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in a college learning center, classroom, lab or similar environment.
Hazards: Potential interaction with anxious and/or distressed individuals.
Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a college learning center, classroom, lab or similar setting; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other general office and instructional equipment and technologies; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office and instructional technologies and equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 10 pounds; hearing and speaking to exchange information
Salary PlacementPart-time Tutors are paid based on accumulated work hours according to the salary schedule below; initial salary placement for all tutors will start at level 1, per the guidelines in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws.

Sick Leave
New hires will receive eight (8) hours of sick leave upon hire. An ILC instructor will receive one hour per term of paid sick leave per ILC, which includes Special Loading. An hourly instructor or tutor will receive one hour of paid sick leave per 11 hours of employment. Unused sick leave will accumulate up to a maximum of 80 hours and be available for use in subsequent academic terms.
Tuition Waiver Plan
Each employee will be eligible for a full tuition waiver, which is equivalent to 24 credits, for each term in which the employee is working for the College. Such waiver may be used for tuition for credit courses or the fee in lieu of tuition for noncredit courses (commonly called Fee B). Such tuition waivers are not cumulative. However, an employee may use a tuition waiver in the term immediately following the term in which the waiver was earned. Employees and their spouses/domestic partners will pay only course-specific fees. Tuition waiver(s) may be assigned by the employee to his/her immediate family (to one or amongst the family) to be used in the term in which the waiver is earned by the employee or the term immediately following the term in which the waiver was earned.
