Overview of Position
Under the general supervision of the Principal, Program Manager or Supervisor, with specific direction from a designated certificated teacher, provides certificated teachers with instructional and non instructional support services to promote an effective and safe learning environment and to lead language immersion activities.
This position is in a Japanese dual language immersion program. Students receive instruction in English and Japanese.
Essential Functions
- Provides instructional assistance and works with students individually or in small groups as directed by the teacher; utilizes classroom instructional support materials and equipment; supports teacher in management of student behavior and maintains a safe environment for students; confers with students and refers disruptive behavior to designated teacher/administrator.
- Assists teacher in planning and implementing lessons; prepares instructional and supplementary materials; organizes and implements classroom projects; assists with creative activities in science, math, music, art and language and activities which promote social and learning experiences; provides input on students’ progress.
- Modifies and adjusts lessons based on the needs of students, their language abilities and academic level; adapts basic language immersion curriculum, developed by a certificated teacher, to prepare and lead language immersion activities.
- Provides teacher with support services such as screening and identifying at-risk students by testing and monitoring students’ academic progress and behavior patterns; may enter test score and data in computer.
- May maintain and record information for students’ records.
- May coordinate with the teacher to monitor the inventory of classroom supplies, furniture, equipment and materials; may coordinate the ordering of supplies with the teacher; may collect permission slips for field trips and various activities; reports damage or missing equipment.
- Performs other classroom support functions as required, such as correcting papers, typing, filing and duplicating curriculum materials.
- Attends building/department staff meetings and in-service workshops, as requested.
- Maintains liaison, as appropriate, with parents, students, and school staff to monitor student progress.
- May supervise students during play periods, before and after school, in lunchroom/hallways, as assigned.

- Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Principal; works under the lead direction of a certificated teacher.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of
- math, science, literacy or other subject matter, as assigned, and verbal/written fluency in appropriate native language;
- total physical response strategies.
Ability to
- adapt language for non-native speakers;
- Communicate effectively in speech and writing in the target language as well as English;
- Relate effectively with students, parent, District staff and the public in a multi-cultural community and in the program to which assigned

DISTINGUISHING QUALIFICATIONS:
Specific positions may require distinguishing qualifications, such as knowledge and understanding of designated student populations; ethnic groups/cultures; fluency and literacy in a designated second language; ability to translate or interpret or perform other designated services to meet the needs of students in the program/grade level to which assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the Organization’s services.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Required to work with a wide range of student academic performance and behavior/communication skills; may occasionally or regularly deal with distraught or difficult students; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; required to have sufficient stamina and concentration to maintain program standards; may be required to provide playground and bus loading/unloading supervision; may be required to work before and after school to provide language assistance for parent conferences and other school activities.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 30% walking, and 40% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:
(a) Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; or(b) Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or(c) Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; or(d) Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of related work experience.
Please note: The Language Immersion IA job title requires that you successfully demonstrate the ability to adapt and lead language immersion activities. If you are interested in adding this job title, you must take/pass a series of tests, including a demonstration lesson, which are administered at our International Schools.
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES:
Valid State of Washington Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility
