Role Overview
The Senior Director, Business Development for the GX Customer Solutions Group will play a pivotal role in establishing Mitsubishi Power as the leading solutions and technology integrator in the rapidly evolving energy transition market across the Americas (North, Central, and South America). This position requires an experienced professional capable of leading and overseeing early-stage project definition, strategically integrating diverse Mitsubishi Power products and capabilities into comprehensive GX solutions, and ensuring robust technical and execution feasibility. The Senior Director will be instrumental in translating Mitsubishi Power’s strategic vision into tangible project opportunities, providing leadership and guidance to the Pittsburgh-based GX-CSG team (4 members) under the direction of senior management, fostering strong customer and partner relationships to accelerate business growth, and championing the ‘One MHI’ approach for decarbonized infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrates Mitsubishi Power’s core competencies: Action oriented, change champion, customer-focused, developing self & others, and ownership.
- Lead and strategically guide the collaboration with Mitsubishi Power core business teams, as well as other business units (SBUs), R&D, and global entities, to develop and advance integrated GX solutions tailored to specific customer needs across the Americas, with a strong emphasis on technical viability and execution strategy.
- Provide technical and execution leadership for the incubation of new GX ventures, such as Aero-derivative GT combined cycle offerings, guiding them through development, testing, and launch phases, always ensuring a strong customer-centric approach and aligning with Mitsubishi Power’s broader GX strategy.
- Provide owner-side engineering advisory service and Board-level support for large Mitsubishi Power projects (e.g., ACES Delta) to ensure their successful execution and substantial completion, acting as a critical point of contact for the project and its stakeholders, and leveraging technical and execution insights gained for future GX opportunities.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with new and emerging key customers, partners, and industry stakeholders to ensure solution relevance and market pull, thereby expanding Mitsubishi Power technical/product adoption opportunities, while also supporting Mitsubishi Power’s strong existing customer base.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPI’s) to measure the success of strategic initiatives, driving accountability across the team.
- Strategically lead and oversee the development and execution of business development strategies, from initial contact to supporting developers, EPC’s and other partners until project formation, ensuring alignment with the broader GX vision and strategy of Mitsubishi Power and prioritizing sustainable customer benefit.
- Coordinate with Project Development teams and Financial Analysts to ensure robust risk mitigation, optimized fund allocation, clear revenue forecasts, and proactive communication of potential financial liabilities/claims, with a strong focus on technical and execution implications.
- Oversee and strategically direct the development and maintenance of a deep understanding of the GX market landscape, including technology trends, policy shifts, competitive dynamics, and customer needs across the Americas (North, Central, and South America).
- Collaborate closely with Mitsubishi Power’s existing intelligence teams, providing a GX-focused strategic direction for their activities that aligns with Mitsubishi Power’s overarching GX policy.
- Engage in information-driven discussions to ensure flexible, actionable, and comprehensive intelligence coverage across short, medium, and long-term horizons, directly supporting customer-facing strategies.
- Work in mutual complementarity with Mitsubishi Power’s Strategy Team on strategic planning and insights related to the energy transition.
- Lead the development and execution of market research, competitive analysis, and customer segmentation activities, formulating and maintaining a long-term vision and scenarios for the GX business environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in engineering or a relevant technical field from a four-year accredited college or university is required. A graduate degree is a plus.
- Minimum of 15+ years of directly related project management, project execution, or technical business development experience in the energy sector is required. Relevant experience in large-scale project engineering, EPC management, and capital equipment sales may also be considered.
- 15+ years of experience in the Power Generation sector with a deep knowledge of business development related to gas turbine technology, renewable energy integration, and carbon capture.
- Demonstrated experience with the business development lifecycle, including key stage processes and funding impacts.
- History of successful negotiations for key project contracts such as partnership agreements, land acquisition, off-take, and feedstock agreements.
- Deep understanding of engineering principles, related disciplines, and a comprehensive awareness of US and international codes and standards relevant to large-scale project execution.
- Business Development market knowledge as it pertains to energy technology, power markets, economics and US energy policies.
- PMP certification is a plus. Strong proficiency in project management scheduling and estimating tools such as MS Project or Primavera P6 is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking capabilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Financial modeling experience is a plus, but not essential for this role.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are essential. A profound appreciation for the importance of clear, consistent dialogue with global and Japanese teams, along with a deep understanding of the challenges and nuances in cross-cultural communication, is paramount. You’ll need to effectively share and align on strategic directions, foster mutual understanding, and achieve consensus on execution approaches.
- Proven ability to lead and mentor a team of professionals, drive complex projects, define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and coordinate and prioritize multiple projects and tasks. Interest and ability to work effectively in a small, dynamic team environment and collaborate with cross-cultural teams.
- Ability to travel frequently (up to 50%) within the Americas, including regular trips to Lake Mary, and occasional international travel to Japan may be required.
