Role Overview
The Senior Manager, Investment Accounting, serves as a subject matter expert (SME) and key contributor to the oversight of the Company’s investment accounting and reporting functions. In partnership with the manager/senior manager and VP, Corporate Controller, this role supports the strategic direction and execution of investment accounting activities, including close processes and financial disclosures under U.S. GAAP, Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and consistent investment accounting and reporting that supports executive leadership, board reporting, regulatory filings, parent company reporting and external rating agency engagement. The Senior Manager will play a critical role in maintaining strong internal controls, enhancing processes, and delivering high-quality financial insights.
Additionally, this position acts as a key liaison and SME between investment accounting and other stakeholders, including investment management, treasury, and auditors, helping to ensure alignment across functions and transparency in financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist as SME in managing daily operations of the Investment Accounting function, ensuring preparation of accurate and timely financial records, compliance with internal control standards, and quality service to subsidiaries and other departments
- Ensure compliance with NAIC statutory reporting requirements, including Schedule D, BA, DB, and related disclosures
- Interpret and implement new accounting standards and provide technical guidance on investment-related transactions for U.S. GAAP, SAP, and IFRS
- Provide guidance as SME for investment accounting and reporting for a diverse investment portfolio, including fixed income, structured securities, equities, and alternatives products
- Ensure accurate classification, valuation, and income recognition across U.S. GAAP, SAP, and IFRS frameworks
- Prepare/Review quarterly and annual investment reporting deliverables
- Maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting (Japanese SOX)
- Ensure timely resolution of audit findings and continuous improvement of the control environment
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors on investment accounting matters
- Perform special projects as requested by the VP, Corporate Controller, and executive management
What You Bring
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, a related field, or equivalent education and/or experience
Experience
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a focus on investment accounting
- 5+ years of leadership experience
- Minimum of 4 years of insurance industry experience
- Demonstrated expertise in U.S. GAAP, SAP, and IFRS
Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred
- Public accounting experience preferred
- Strong technical accounting knowledge, particularly related to investments and financial instruments
- In-depth understanding of NAIC reporting and the insurance regulatory environment
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and business acumen
- Proficiency with ERP systems (experience with Oracle PeopleSoft preferred)
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel
Travel
Occasional travel (up to 10% of time)
