Summary:

This position is primarily involved with the development of or improvements to friction formulations and/or brake pad designs. Work includes selection and testing of formulations, raw materials, components (back plates, noise shims, wear indicators, etc.), or full brake pad assembly that will be suitable for the project. In addition; work may include responding to a customer request for a particular product or design. The typical cycle includes conceptualizing, developing prototypes, testing. Summarizing/reporting data, and in some cases prototype to production transfer.

Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Responsible for development and validation of new formulations or brake pad design technologies.

2. Create and develop brake pad requirements and associated test methods to meet customer/internal expectations.

3. Interface with customers (Tier 1 or OEM), suppliers, other ADVICS departments, and manage testing schedules and reports to meet program milestones.

4. Plan and execute testing for projects to assure on-time and appropriate components, assembly, and vehicle level tests are carried out and conform to customer/internal requirements.

5. Responsible to analyze data received from tests and summarize it necessary formats.

6. Design, perform, and oversee engineering tasks to identify viable solutions for performance and manufacturing issues

7. Collaborate with other system and design colleagues internally and at the ADVICS- Japan on project issues, design improvements and quality improvements, as required.

8. Assist the Change Process (CP) and Engineering Change Notification (ECN) process. Including the ability to coordinate design change activities and the Request for Design & Development of Parts (RDDP) process with the appropriate Engineering Department at ADVICS-Japan.

9. Attend regular internal and customer open issues meetings, such as, Product Development Team (PDT), Cross Functional Team (CFT) and New Product Launch Team (NPLT) meetings to ensure that progress of development meets required milestones. This may

include preparing reports for use at internal management review meetings or customer meetings and/or giving presentations of technical findings.

10. Conduct research development trend studies of friction materials, which includes, performing investigation of benchmark parts and participating in technical conferences.

11. Responsible for creating project specific prototypes utilizing ADVICS lab resources, may need to design tooling, release prototype level drawings, issue formulation recipes, and processing specifications.

Other Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Support customers by conducting customer presentations, supporting customer trips, attending customer meetings to ensure that customer meetings have the proper technical support.

2. Assist management with maintaining DFMEA, DVP&R, PVP&R, DWO, drawings, program timing plans and other technical and program documents.

3. Support Safety initiatives and, perform 5S and improvement activities.

4. Provide support to manufacturing plant and other engineering departments as needed

5. Other special projects, tasks or duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

– Some domestic or international travel may be required.

– Most work is performed in a typical office setting; however some work will be performed in a manufacturing setting such as a manufacturing site, plant floor or a test laboratory setting. The work is a mixture of sedentary and light industrial work.

– This position requires extensive verbal and written communication with others internal to the company and with external customers and suppliers.

– Travel is required to meeting sites, proving grounds, customer facilities and supplier and Affiliate Company manufacturing plants.

– This position may require the individual to work additional hours to meet deadlines, as necessary.

– Ability to lift prototype or quality concern parts up to a maximum of 50 lbs.

– Dusty area, oil, grease, brake fluid, and ammonia gas and other smells.

Equipment and Supporting Services:

– Basic Equipment needed is; laptop, Cell Phone optional: BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) allows the use of personal smartphone or iPad tablet to be connected to company apps, business cards and security badge.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Desired Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering (BSME, MSME) and 2+ years of automotive brake engineering experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

– A bachelor’s degree in engineering and 2 years of professional related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Skills:

– Ability to manage multiple competing deadlines effectively and professionally.

– Skill in effectively participating in teams made up of peers, subordinates and managers.

– Skill in communicating with others in different departments and to other people outside the organization verbally and through writing.

– Knowledge of 3D CAD specifically in CATIA, with 3D modeling and drawing, is preferred.

– Ability to speak, read, and write in a foreign language is a plus. (German, Italian, Japanese)

– Knowledge of technical drawings with ability to review and mark-up as needed.

– Ability to use MS Office products, MS Project, Email, Internet, Voicemail, and other miscellaneous electronic devices and software products.

– Knowledge of programming software a plus. (Visual Basic, C++)

– Ability to use MS Office products, MS Project, Email, Internet, Voicemail, and other miscellaneous electronic devices and software products.
