Vermont State University
Summer research positions are available to assist with applied research into the ecology of tick-borne diseases, through CDC- and NSF-funded projects. We are investigating the use of vegetation management to reduce tick populations and the risk of tick-borne diseases in Vermont.
The goals of this research are to 1) measure tick population sizes in forest ecosystems; 2) identify and quantify the abundance of invasive and native plants and 3) study the relationship between tick population sizes and the spread of invasive plant species. The research is primarily performed in forests in Rutland County, Vermont. Additional research and meetings may take place on the Castleton campus of Vermont State University.
Two positions are available for approximately 25-30 hours per week at a rate no lower than $20/hour dependent on experience. We will generally work four days per week, but those four days may vary depending on the weather. We do our best to determine optimal sampling days during the prior week. Field work may be necessary on an occasional fifth day of the week if weather is poor during other weeks. Research will be conducted from late May through mid-July. Additional hours may be possible in October and November of 2025.
Qualifications: Past experience with the drag cloth method for collecting ticks, experience identifying and quantifying percent cover of invasive plant species (Japanese barberry, Honeysuckle and Common buckthorn) and a working knowledge of the biology of the black-legged tick is desirable. A car is needed and mileage to/from field sites will be reimbursed.
How to apply: Provide a cover letter expressing your interest in the position and relevant qualifications, along with a copy of your resume. Send your application materials to william.landesman@vermontstate.edu and kristen.ross@vermontstate.edu.
