Writing in the Disciplines (WID) courses are designed to help students develop a robust writing practice throughout their academic careers, starting with intensive attention to writing in a specific topic area. Every semester, GW offers more than a hundred WID courses across nearly every discipline, from STEM to theater to Japanese. Recent WID courses have broached topics as diverse as Arab Politics; Race, Gender and Shakespeare; Sports and Event Marketing; Washington, D.C., History and Culture; Broadcast News Writing; Epidemics in American History and much more.

Position Specific Summary

The Writing in the Disciplines (WID) program at GWU is seeking a talented student front-end developer to join our team. This role involves completing and maintaining a dynamic and interactive web application that seamlessly interfaces with our recently developed API. The successful candidate will be responsible for completing a user-friendly interface that allows for efficient management and updating of course information from diverse data sources, streamlined report generation, and smooth interaction with our
comprehensive database. You will work closely with faculty and staff to understand their needs and translate them into functional and aesthetically pleasing digital solutions. Additionally, this position will see the successful candidate lead documentation efforts for the web application such that it can be easily used and maintained long-term by WID faculty and staff who may have limited technical backgrounds and proficiencies.

This position requires a creative problem solver who can balance technical expertise with a strong eye for user-centered design and implementation, ensuring that the end product is both functional and visually appealing. By joining our team, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in frontend development, improve your problem-solving skills, and contribute to a program that plays a crucial role in enhancing the academic writing skills of students across various disciplines.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a responsive web application using modern frontend technologies.
  • Create intuitive user interfaces for data entry, modification, and retrieval.
  • Implement report generation features using data visualization libraries.
  • Integrate the frontend with our existing RESTful API.
  • Collaborate with the WID team to refine application requirements and features.
  • Ensure the application follows best practices for web security and performance.
  • Participate in code reviews and maintain clean, well-documented code.
  • Troubleshoot and address security vulnerabilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current advanced undergraduate or graduate student at GW (or someone with equivalent work experience).
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Coursework or experience with at least one modern frontend framework (e.g., React, Angular, or Vue.js).
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and integrating them into web applications.
  • Understanding of responsive and accessible web design principles.
  • Familiarity or experience with version control systems, preferably Git.
  • Basic knowledge of UI/UX design principles.

Time Commitment:Approximately 10 hours per week, most of which can be done remotely, but with weekly meetings with the WID team, and with flexibility around academic schedules. [probably a total of approximately 100 hours]

  • 20 hours to familiarize with the existing back-end and front-end
  • 15-20 hours for design
  • 40 hours for implementation
  • 10 hours for testing & validation
  • 10 hours for documentation

Duration:
This position is expected to last through the end of the Fall 2025 semester.

Standard Position Description

The student will provide advanced technical and/or computer support assistance. Tasks may include: maintaining and operating technical systems, hardware, and network configuration, planning and coordinating projects and workshops for the department, building and managing websites, assisting with prioritization and completion of daily operations, participating in the hiring, training, and supervision of other student employees. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience/Familiarity with:

  • Data visualization libraries (e.g., D3.js, Chart.js).
  • Web application performance optimization.
  • Relational Database Systems (e.g., MySQL, PL/SQL, SQLite, etc.)
    • Some full-stack experience is preferred.
  • CSS preprocessors and/or advanced features (e.g., SASS, LESS, CSS3 Media Queries).
