About the Department

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at NC State provides students with a broad and intimate understanding of the rich and varied cultures of our globe-understanding that is built on solid competence of spoken and written skills in the language(s) you choose.

At the graduate level, the Department offers students the opportunity to major in the following programs of study leading to the B.A. degree: Arabic Studies, Asian Language, French, German Studies, and Spanish. Students who are eager to make teaching their career can pursue the B.A. Degree in French or Spanish Education. We also offer minors in the following: Arabic (through Middle Eastern Studies), Chinese, Classics (Greek and Latin), French, German Studies, Hindu/Urdu, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. In addition, we teach classes in Persian, Portuguese, and English as a second language.

At the graduate level, we have an M.A. program in World Languages and Cultures with three separate concentrations: one in French, one in Spanish and one in TESOL. Each of the concentrations incorporates literature, linguistics, and culture courses.

To provide students with more possibilities for languages or levels that may not be taught at NC State, we are part of an inter-institutional collaboration with other schools in the UNC system through a system-wide Language Exchange, so that we may provide greater language opportunities for our students. Additional information-NC State benefits from a dedicated Deaf, Hard of Hearing, & Deaf Blind Services Coordinator/Certified interpreter, as well as a dedicated team of part-time hearing and Deaf staff interpreters.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of World Languages & Cultures and the Department of English at North Carolina State University invites applications for a professional-track lecturer position in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies.

The position is 75% in World Languages and Cultures, where the candidate will teach three first and second year ASL courses per semester, and 25% in English, where one course per semester will be taught in the sociolinguistics of the deaf community, the linguistic structure of ASL, or similar areas. Total teaching load is 4 courses per semester.

Other Responsibilities

Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in a qualifying field (American Sign Language, Linguistics of ASL, Signed Language Interpreting, Deaf Culture, Deaf Education, Deaf Studies, or other related degree), or Master’s degree in another field with 18 graduate hours in a qualifying field required

Other Required Qualifications

• Fluency in American Sign Language

Preferred Qualifications

• Deaf Interpreter
• Instruction experience and proof of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level
• Native speaker of ASL
• American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) Teacher Certification
• ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview) 4 or higher
• Knowledge and experience with Signing Naturally curriculum, GoReact, and course management systems
