Senior Quantum Scientist
Summary:
QuEra is looking for a Senior Quantum Scientist to join the Quantum Computing Services team at QuEra Japan, with a focus on QuEra’s Gemini-class digital quantum computer at the AIST facility in Tsukuba. The team’s goal is to productize this machine and make it useful by delivering quantum computing functionality to users. Our product is a full-stack system, and ecosystem, for user-driven innovation.
In this role, you will be working alongside scientists and engineers at QuEra’s Boston headquarters and in Japan, to develop and operate the world’s first digital-mode quantum computing system and service based on neutral atom qubits.
You will be expected to lead the following activities:
(1) Research and development of quantum computers in Japan to improve hardware and software, including the programs funded by the Japanese government and upgrades of AIST system.
(2) Collaborations with institutions and manufacturers in Japan with a focus on quantum science.
You will be expected to contribute to the following activities:
(1) Installation and bring-up of the machine in AIST, Tsukuba, Japan.
(2) Integration and testing of the quantum computing service stack.
(3) Development of calibration pipelines to enable arbitrary programmability of the system by a user.
(4) Product launch of the quantum computing service at AIST.
(5) Overall operations of the system, to be optimized for performance reliability, uptime and running costs.
(6) Continuous development and integration of capabilities and features across the hardware and software stacks, as defined by customer needs, market opportunities, and technological developments at QuEra.
(7) Supporting users in their projects and needs and maximize the utility of the quantum computer for them.
During the onboarding process, the new hire is expected to spend time at QuEra’s headquarters (Boston, United States) to learn and build relationships with the larger team members.
Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in experimental AMO physics, with at least 6 years of hands-on experience in building or operating a neutral atom or a trapped ion system.
- Success in research, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and/or scientific talks and other contributions.
- Strong communication skills and strong interest in working with a variety of researchers, customers and end users to understand their needs and translate them into technical requirements and roadmaps.
- Software skills, including programming languages and a basic understanding of software architectures.
- Experience in mentoring or training scientists or engineers.
- Demonstrated excellence of working as part of multi-disciplinary or cross-functional teams.
- A willingness to provide on-call support for machine and service operations.
