Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor (3 Instructors)

Summary:

The Adult ESL Instructor shall provide English language instruction to adult immigrant English language learners whose children are enrolled in the Fort Lee Public School District. Content-focused English language instruction including reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar will be provided. The Adult Education ESL Instructor will report directly to the Assistant Superintendent.

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years teaching experience.

Preferred

  • NJ Teaching Certificate
  • Familiarity with effective pedagogy in teaching the English language to multilingual learners. Knowledge of specific needs of adult learners encouraged.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong knowledge of English grammar and teaching pronunciation, reading, and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language (Korean, Japanese, or Spanish preferred).
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from adult learners.
  • Experience and proficiency in using technology and the internet in the classroom for instructional purposes

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills, including ability to work cooperatively and effectively with a culturally and linguistically diverse range of students and staff.
  • Experience working with the adult education population, curriculum development, mandated welfare reform, and dislocated workers are preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for teaching ESL courses to eligible parents using instructional methods geared toward the adult learner in a classroom setting. Courses may be in person or remote.
  2. Develop, implement, curriculum and lesson plans based on the learning needs of culturally diverse and multi-skill level students to increase English language skills
  3. Develop and/or select classroom instruction materials, handouts, PowerPoint materials and other resources relevant to classroom instruction.
  4. Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, that may include group or individualized instruction to help students make learning gains.
  5. Evaluate academic growth to students and communicate this information to students individually
  6. Complete and maintain appropriate student attendance and ensure timely submission of data and reports to the Assistant Superintendent.
  7. Responsible for all communication to students including, but not limited to registration information, class assignments, scheduling changes, and any other information pertinent to the program.
  8. Maintain good communications and working relationships with appropriate staff, appropriate agencies, and class site location staff.
  9. Maintain good communications and work effectively with all other departments of the Fort Lee School District on matters concerning the program.
  10. Adhere to all district policies, procedure, and mandates.
  11. Participate in teacher meetings and professional development activities as required.
  12. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent.

Working Conditions:

Must be available to work between the hours of 3:30 PM and 7:30 PM, twice per week. Classes will run twice a week for one hour per class.

  • Program Period – March 2025 to June 2025
  • Salary – $60/hour
  • Hours – not to exceed 50 hours per instructor
  • Number of instructors are contingent upon number of students enrolled in program

Effective September 1, 2011, all employees of school districts must reside in the State of New Jersey, unless exempted under law. If you already work for the school district as of September 1, 2011, and you do not live in New Jersey, you are not required to move to New Jersey. However, if you begin your office, position or employment on September 1, 2011 or later, you must reside in New Jersey. If you do not reside in New Jersey, you have one year after the date you take your office, position or employment to relocate your residence to New Jersey. If you do not do so, you are subject to removal from your office, position or employment.
