The Position
The City of Beaverton’s Office of Equity and Inclusion is seeking a collaborative leader to be the city’s next Equity and Belonging Manager and shape the future of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) work in Oregon’s largest metropolitan area.
As an experienced and resourceful DEIB champion, the Equity and Belonging Manager serves as a Strategic Advisor to the Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer and leads the development and implementation of citywide DEIB efforts to cultivate a culture of belonging for staff and residents. This position will guide and shape the city’s strategic vision and develop a comprehensive DEIB strategy.
The ideal candidate will have a track record of developing successful equity and belonging initiatives, excellent communication and leadership skills, and a commitment to promoting an inclusive environment in all aspects of city governance and community life. By providing guidance, support, and consultation to city leadership and departments, the Office of Equity and Inclusion promotes cultural change and embed equity and inclusion into every aspect of city work and livability. Through collaboration with city staff, community stakeholders, and regional partners, the team strives to make city programs and services culturally responsive to the needs of all residents. The mission is to cultivate a sense of belonging and ensure that Beaverton thrives as a welcoming and equitable city for all.

This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the city’s efforts to implement its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives, focusing on creating a culture of belonging and delivering equitable outcomes through city programs and services.
  • Advise the Equity and Inclusion Officer on policies and procedures that support and promote.
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources Department to encourage cultural understanding and an environment of wellness and belonging.
  • Lead the city’s Equity and Belonging Champions team. Recruit, train, and onboard new members from all departments; plan and facilitate monthly meetings; and support special projects and committees. Share team recommendations and communicate regularly with leadership.
  • Help departments improve and innovate in their programs and services by making them more culturally competent.
  • Act as a resource to enhance public outreach and engage underserved and underrepresented groups in the community.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with community organizations to foster collaboration and create opportunities for public outreach. Lead and participate in community conversations about DEIB.
  • Collaborate on city-wide DEIB initiatives and create reports and other communications on department programs and initiatives.
  • Serve as staff liaison to a city advisory board, helping to strengthen connections between community members and city government. Support recruitment and onboarding, plan meetings, and facilitate healthy group dynamics. Help with subcommittees and present recommendations to City Council.
  • Contribute to the promotion of organizational values, including personal and professional development; diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; actively promote the value of respect in a multicultural society.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field, and
  • Five years of program management experience in a similar area, including
  • Two years of experience in a supervisory or management role; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing and special requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the city’s driving standards.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Compensation

Wage range: $7,000.40 – $9,382.15 monthly
Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
