OBAYASHI – JAY DEE, JV is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our tunnel project team in Manchester, NH. This role involves operating specialized equipment safely and efficiently to support underground construction activities. This is an hourly, nonexempt position. Start pay at $41.00/hr DOE.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment operation: Operate common heavy equipment such as a crane (as CCO crane operator), loader, backhoe, forklift, skid steer, and drill rig in a safe and professional manner. Operate specialized underground/tunnel equipment such as Locomotive, Pressurized face Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), Slurry & Water Treatment Plant in a safe and professional manner.
  • Safety and compliance: Following all safety regulations, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and monitoring the tunnel for hazards.
  • Equipment maintenance: Performing regular inspections and minor maintenance on machinery to ensure it is functioning correctly and to prevent breakdowns.
  • Performance monitoring: Perform daily equipment upkeep tasks and basic maintenance.
  • Team collaboration: Communicating with supervisors, engineers, and other construction workers to ensure project goals are met.
  • Record keeping: Maintaining accurate logs of work performed, equipment status, and any incidents.
  • Key responsibilities involve adhering strictly to safety protocols, monitoring equipment performance, communicating with the project team, and sometimes managing tunnel control systems for ventilation and traffic.
  • Attend and actively participate in daily activity plans and safety meetings.

Additional responsibilities (depending on the role)

  • Perform daily equipment upkeep tasks and basic maintenance.
  • Tunnel control: Monitoring and managing systems like ventilation, lighting, and traffic in an operational tunnel from a control room.
  • Emergency response: Responding to alarms or other emergencies in a tunnel environment.
  • Set and follow grades for excavation and construction work.
  • Apply knowledge of rigging and rigging methods for safe material handling.
  • Provide additional support to the project team as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3+ years of heavy equipment operation experience, preferably in tunnel or underground projects.
  • Knowledge of rigging techniques and safety standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret grade plans and follow instructions.
  • Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.
  • Physical ability to perform labor tasks when necessary.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 trained preferred
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and protocols.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with a team.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to work in confined or underground spaces.
  • Comfortable working shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Skills

  • Problem-solving: Ability to think quickly and problem-solve in an ever-changing environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude: A mechanically inclined mindset is beneficial for equipment maintenance and issue identification. This is your equipment; if it doesn’t work, you don’t
  • Communication: The ability to communicate effectively with other crew members, often using hand signals or radios.

Physical requirements

  • Excellent coordination: Must have exceptional eye/hand/foot coordination to safely operate heavy machinery with multiple controls.
  • Physical strength: Needs the ability to exert 40 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, or pull objects.
  • Stamina: Capable of prolonged periods of sitting while operating equipment and standing/walking for manual tasks.
  • Manual dexterity: Requires the use of hands for grasping, manipulating controls, and using hand tools and hammers.
  • Flexibility: Able to bend, reach, and twist as required by the job tasks.

Work Environment

  • Work in both above-ground and underground spaces to support the tunnel operations.
  • The job is physically demanding and requires working in various climates and temperatures, often in noisy, dirty, and wet conditions.
  • Able to maintain composure in potentially stressful situations.
  • May require extended hours, nights, weekends, and on-call for emergencies.
  • A willingness to work shifts, which may include weekends and overtime, as necessary.
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
  • Involves close collaboration with a team of engineers, geologists, equipment operators, and safety officers.
