THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION FOR THE GRADES 4-8 NEWCOMER SUMMER ACADEMY PROGRAM

Bilingual Educational Assistant (Spanish, Somali, Russian, Arabic, or Japanese)

LOCATION, DATES, HOURS

PROGRAM START DATE (First Day Students in Session): June 30th, 2025

PROGRAM END DATE (Last Day Students in Session): July 31st, 2025

EMPLOYEE START DATE: June 23rd, 2025

EMPLOYEE END DATE: August 1st, 2025

TRAINING DATES :June 23rd, 2025 – June 27th, 2025

DUTY DAYS/HOURS: Monday – Friday; 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM

LOCATIONS: one position at Tubman and one position at Kellogg

CONTINGENCIES:

All positions are contingent on enrollment of students. It is essential that applicants remain available until the registration process is complete. We will, however, make earlier commitments as definite positions become evident.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Newcomer Summer Academy (NSA) is a supplemental summer academic program located at 5sitesserving rising 4th-8th grade students from schools throughout the district.Each of these sites is a “hub” site and will serve NewcomerMultilingual Learners fromneighboring school communities. Classrooms will be organized by grade level blends (4/5 and 6-8), and each will support about 12students in English LanguageDevelopment, Literacy and STEAM curriculum (curriculum and lesson plans provided for teaching staff). PPS staff with an ESOL endorsement from any site can apply to work at aNewcomer Summer Academy hub.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Bilingual Educational Assistant provides designated supporting services to a classroom teacher or teaching staff responsible for students in classrooms, resource centers, or other school and school-related areas, including tutoring ESL and bilingual students in the mainstream classroom.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the instruction of ELL students in English and/or native language under the supervision of a certified, licensed teacher.
  • Assist, promote, and support family involvement communication between family and the school (e.g., attendance).
  • Support instruction in native language literacy where appropriate.
  • Provide translations and interpretation services as appropriate, with the time provided during scheduled working hours.
  • Attend meetings including parent conferences, evening activities, home visits, and ESL/Bilingual Education department meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education :Must hold one of the following to meet ESSA guidelines:

    • Associates Degree or higher (official transcript required at time of hire)
    • Two (2) years of college completed (72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits earned) (official transcript required at time of hire)
    • Passing scores from the Praxis ParaPro Assessment

    Work Experience :Experience working with ESL/Bilingual students and ESL/Bilingual parents. Training in Content Area Methodology.

    Skills and Abilities :

    • Ability to demonstrate standards of moral character and behavior as required of teachers (e.g., to serve as an effective role model for students).
    • Ability to work with children and families from a low-income background and with whom English is a second language.

    Language Requirement:Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish and cultural competence

    Pay Rate:Current PPS employees who work the same summer position as their regular school year position will be paid their current hourly rate of pay, but not less than the hourly summer school rate. All other hires will be paid $20.05 + 5% per hour.

    Maximum USD hourly rate: 20.05
