Position Summary
Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for an Office Assistant in the college’s Japanese Agriculture Training Program (JATP). This position will assist and support the Japanese Agriculture Training Program’s Director by providing clerical services and supporting the trainees with daily physical activities.
This is a temporary position from June 16 – August 19, 2025. Work schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, not to exceed 40 hours per week.
The Japanese Agricultural Training Program (JATP) is an intensive nine-week program incorporating English, Spanish, and agricultural instruction.
JATP was visualized as a means of improving Japan’s agriculture via the transfer of U.S. technology and farming methods. Today’s JATP represents a continuing effort, not only to improve agriculture in Japan, but also to promote greater understanding between Japan and the United States.
Academic as well as comprehensive on-the-farm training is used to accomplish this. Additionally, trainee insight into American culture and institutions is developed through participation in host family and community activities.

Essential Job Duties
Essential Duties:
The JATP Office Assistant will assist and support the Japanese Agriculture Training Program’s Director by providing clerical services and supporting the trainees with daily activities. This will include and is not limited to planning, scheduling, organizing, and assisting during the nine-week training program.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Prior office setting experience either on the job or educational.
- Excellent customer service skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment; prioritize multiple tasks and projects to meet deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Prior work or educational experience at Big Bend Community College.
- Basic understanding of the Japanese culture, and a willingness to learn.

COMPENSATION:
This is a temporary, part-time position paid on an hourly basis based on a submitted timesheet. The rate for this position is $17.00 per hour. Hours will not exceed 40 hours per week. This position is not benefit eligible.
Temporary, part-time positions earn sick leave based on hours worked each pay period at the rate of one (1) hour of sick leave for every forty (40) hours of work.
Temporary hourly positions are exempt from the civil service rules and are limited to one (1) appointment at BBCC. Temporary hourly employees must not work more than 12 consecutive months or 1050 hours or more in any twelve (12) consecutive month period from the original date of hire or July 1, 2022, whichever is later.
In compliance with WAC 357-04-045, candidates previously employed by Big Bend Community College in a part-time hourly/temporary position after July 1, 2022 will not qualify for this position and cannot be considered for employment in any part-time hourly/temporary position.
